Before everyone starts suggesting I use the search function, I did use it but found no satisfactory answer. Anyway, i'm applying to a specialty my home school lacks a residency program on (in fact, we may not even have a department for it...). Anyway, my top choice is a very competitive place and i've already sent my email expressing interest and what not. The doc who has been my mentor, works with a doc who did residency at my top choice but whom I never had the chance to work with. He told me he may be able to place a call for me since I don't have a program director to do it for me. Is it really worth the trouble?

It doesn't matter if you don't have that particular specialty at your medical school.

A single well phrased phone call from your faculty to your number 1 choice is always a good idea.

Of course it helps if that faculty member is in the same specialty or trained at that program but beggars can't be choosers.

If this guy is willing to make a phone call to you and you think he would represent you well then take him up on his offer.
