I've been taught the ideal path for an academic physician is to publish, get grant funding, get promoted to full professor (tenure), and serve as consultants to make $$, or even create your own spinoff biotech company.

Recently I've been intrigued by MDs who've made names in the industry, or have lots of ties with the industry, like the folks in this link:

To get to CEO, CMO level, what does it take? What's life like in the industry world?

To attain tenured Professor rank will take:
Being significantly brighter than the average physician.
A willingness to put your research interests above essentially everything else.
A serious commitment to research, usually at least 75% protected time, often more.
Luck with obtaining grant money to sustain your 75-90% non clinical time.
About 20 years.

PP is right, if you want to become a full Professor, it will take many years (in the decades possibly).

To become a healthcare executive in a mid sized to big system with a "C" or "VP" next to your name (Physician or otherwise), again it will take quite a few years and usually require an MBA or MHA.
