Hello guys,

My friend told me that one of her friends became a psychiatrist with a M.D dregee without going through med school at all. Is it even possible at all in US? Does such school exist. I thought you need to go through med school to get a MD and becoming a psychiatrist. Hope someone can clear this up.

PS. she was very sure that her friend is not a psychologist.

Thanks!

an MD degree without going through med school? Hmm.. I know there are smart people on here, but pretty sure there is no AP MD that you can do while in high school - so uhm, your friend is mistaken.

She must have gotten her Master's in Didn'thappen. No med school = no M.D.

Maybe she became a psych patient ? 👍

maybe it was a PsyD (doctorate in clinical psychology) instead of a PhD?

Devry School of Medicine😉.

Ya know I think the person that the OP mentioned is just confused. I once sat at this undergrad conference where everyone introduced themselves, and who their research professor was. This girl said that her art professor had an "MD in dance". It was hilarious, but at the same time, its also understandable that those that aren't interested in the field may have limited knowledge in the field.

My guess is the OP's friend confused it with a PsyD.

you gotta pass boards to get that MD license...they dont give them out for free like that! the only way you can get an MD is by going to medical school...there is no other alternative

I'll take it. PsyD it is!
But if the OP comes back and states that they still claim MD, I take it all back.

Some doctors from abroad can get recertified in America by taking refresher courses and then passing the board and getting residency. So that could be the case. Other than that, your friend is VERY confused between a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

yeah, I first thought my friend got confused between psychiatrist and psychologist.

But she kept insisting that it's a MD that her friend got after complete undergraduate in US.

well, this is slightly off the subject... but have you ever heard of physicians with other residencies than psychiatry practicing something similar to psychiatry? I've always been very interested in the human psyche but plan on being in primary care (probably family medicine)

Sounds like those commercials where the person stays in a Holiday Inn Express... 😀

Well I suppose if she went through and became a Nurse Practitioner and then somehow did Psychology, she could in theory practice like a psychiatrist in that she can prescribe you something. But she wouldn't be an MD, that's an NP.

But yea, after undergrad in the US, you are only a BS. ... hehe I just said BS.

Ask your friend to show some proof that her friend can practice like a psychiatrist.

Maybe she got her degree here: http://www.customdegrees.com/

haha, screw 7 years of med school, I'm getting my MD/Ph.D in a month! 😀

One of my interviewers actually had a printout of a degree spam email on his door. Kind of strange when you are interviewing for the real thing.
