I'm looking to tutor 1st-year science courses but I'm having difficulty finding tutees. For those of you working as a tutor, how did you find tutees? So far I posted ads on Craigslist but I'm seeing no results. Now I'm considering to display paper ads with my contact info across campus' bulletin boards and walls, etc., but is this the most effective way? I'm actually quite hesitant to do that because for some unexplainable reason I've always felt those kinds of ads are unreliable or cheap. But if there is no other better way, I'll just have to try that.

I would go to your schools learning center and try tutoring through them. Whats what I do. Tutees go to them, and then I get emails of my dates/times with my tutees. Very little work on my part.

My school has a learning centre but its tutors are volunteers. I actually want to be paid.

Oh snap, we get paid at my learning center... I guess then I would recommend posting adds in your library, and in the buildings where the classes are taught.

I contacted the professor for the course I wanted to tutor in and asked him to include me on the list of available tutors (normally these tutors are drawn from the TAs for the course) on the website.

If you got an A+ in the course before, and you sort of know the professor, they probably won't mind including your name on the tutor list. Never tried doing this out of the blue to a course I haven't taken/prof I don't know - but at the same time if this is the case, I don't know why you'd be tutoring it.

I got a job at my local university tutoring at their center. The pay isnt great but the manager refers me out privately as well so its been very lucrative. I would also post flyers around the halls of science buildings at local campuses. Best of luc!

You could also put up fliers in the science department. But I second going to the teachers and telling them you would like to tutor. People always go to the professors and ask if they know of people that will tutor.

Agreed. If your school doesn't pay you to tutor, speak to the professors that teach the classes you're hoping to tutor in. You also might consider talking to the department undergrad admin, since they often also keep a list of people willing to tutor in their subject.

Also, keep in mind the time of year....school is ending (or already over), which isn't really the peak time for students seeking new tutors. For most students it's either too late or they already have a tutor. You'll likely have better luck a few weeks into the semester, particularly right before and after the first exam.

I'm a tutor as well. You should look into private tutoring agencies and see if you can get a job with them. I work for a company called Club Z! Tutoring. After getting clients, and if they are satisfied with you, you can begin to tutor them without the need of the company.

why would anyone risk paying you to tutor them when they know nothing about you and they can go to a school sanctioned tutor for free?

maybe look into tutoring high school kids instead.

I used to tutor through my school's learning center until I realized I could make at least double the money tutoring privately. If you just really own in your classes, you'll likely have one or two people ask you to tutor them. I had about 3 science classmates whom I tutored, and I also tutored the ACT/GRE/GMAT/etc.
