Hello SDers,

I recall reading on here that Berkeley's admissions process was extremely strenuous - even moreso than UCLA's. I tried searching for this post but was unable to locate it.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks.

Perhaps OP thought there were some super double secret admissions criteria or process that was not posted on their site? 😛

I'm not certain how its really possible to compare admissions between two such graduate schools. There are perhaps rough tiers of competitiveness, but even that is not certain and beyond that its impossible to say. One year, might be more competitive at one school, another it might be the other. One school might be less competitive in most labs, but you happen to be applying to the one that had several outstanding candidates and everyone wants to work in. You might be applying to a non-competitive school, but the faculty member is planning to take their current coordinator into their lab that year unless someone completely blows them away, etc.

It's a program in one of the most desirable locations to live in the United States with faculty conducting high-quality research funded by prestigious grants. Obviously the admissions process would be very strenuous given that they receive many applicants. Instead of concerning yourself with the perceived "strenuousness" of the admissions process, I would recommend closely examining with your fit with the faculty that are accepting students - that's the bottom line.
