berkeley grading system

hi,

does anyone know what type of grading system berkeley uses for 1st and 2nd year? is it pass/fail like some of the med schools, graded on a curve, etc.

Im wondering the same thing, i think things have changed since I was at school but my daughter will be attending soon.

Berkeley Optometry is part of the the grad division now. The grades are from A+ to B- then D to F. No C's. Why no C's? because you can't retake a class you get a C in the UC system and you must graduate with a GPA of at least 3.0 (grad division rules).

Almost all classes are on a curve, but it doesn't work against you.

Almost all of your classes will be graded on a curve. There are a few scattered pass/no pass classes (such as research orientation classes), but those are 1.0 credit classes. Immunology used to be pass/no pass, but because of some students complaining about the lack of a grade (sorry, it was from my class but not including me!), it is now graded. You also get graded in clinic, and most people get around a B+ to A.

The curve works fairly well. The averages are usually high (our class average was a 98% on our first optics midterm), so you’ll be ok if you score around the mean or if you aren’t among the bottom ~5 scores of your class.
