SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH!!!
I interviewed for residency in alot of different cities including Boston, Miami, L.A., Houston, Dallas, and I chose U of Utah in SLC for my first choice for the excellent program and the enviornment of the city.
I have never regreted it. I got great clinical training here and I live within a 30-40 minute drive of 7 major ski resorts, have mountain biking/rock climbing/hiking in my backyard, plus a great live music scene, Sundance Film Festival, etc. Great place to live and for residency training!

Heh - you shall be converted even against your will. 😀 I'm the general opposite of a football fan (think figure skating instead) but even if I don't actually sit and watch the games much, you can bet I follow the scores. So Sunday was a good day. 🙂 My hospital even has a Steeler's tree now in addition to fliers all over the walls...it's insane.

It is a great city. I've been away for far too long, but I still love and miss it. It's a manageable size, decent music scene, very cheap housing, good restaurants, and, above all, very decent salt of the eath people. Oh, and BTW, UPMC is ALWAYS ranked near the tops for medicine. I ultimately decided to go outside the 'burgh for residency. I can't wait to get back there some day. Don't knock it 'til you've seen it. It's a beautiful city. BTW, Seattle is Pittsburgh west, same gloomy, overcast sky and, from what I remember, roughly the same size downtown area. Although the metro area may be bigger in Seattle. For sports, the two don't compare, as you can see from some above posts. Western PA is, and always will be, a football crazy area.

I have to admit that I was amazed with what Pittsburgh had to offer! When I first considered the WPIC for residency, I was warned to "really think about what [I was] doing". When I interviewed there, however, I was convinced that it was the city for me: definate sense of community, friendly, blue collar work ethos, great neighborhoods, affordable housing, wonderful shopping, etc.... And the WPIC: WOW! If I don't match there, I will still live there someday -- perhaps fellowship!? 😀

I would think that the fit of the city would be an important part, and residency just means you need to account for the specific income and time constraints. Otherwise, factors like economy, safety, schools, etc, are pretty personal factors and have a different priority for each of us.

No problem, that's actually why I originally left in the early '90s. Not a real hip place then, most people were moving to DC, NYC, or any other place they could. I hear "the scene" has improved, although most of my friends are now gone, but they all miss it. The South Side has rejuvinated quite a lot, new lofts, bars, etc. It was going that way in the early '90's so I'm sure it's really nuts now. Granted, other larger cities have more to offer, but again for residency, I don't think you can beat it.
san diego... or anywhere that the average temperature for the year is above 50 F.

Don't people ever call the it "San Fran"? Did they ever in the past? I could swear I've heard that in movies. So what do most people call it. Surely, they don't trip over the overly long "San-Fran-cis-co" every time they mention the place.

and btw, it's not because of snobbishness .. we're just saying what terms are common and which aren't, that's all.
In fact, this is an urban legend, but still kinda funny - two prisoners escaped from jail and were sitting around in the city talking about "Frisco". A policeman heard, realized they were either from somewhere else or had been locked up a long time and recaptured them. 🙂)

I just finished my NY interviews. I met several students from San Francisco in the city, and they said they were from San Francisco not SF or 'the city'.avgjoe said:

That's a stupid thing to say about any city, given that everyone's lifestyle and preferences are different and I have not done residency anywhere else. But I will say it's very comfortable to work in a organization that's constantly looking to improve (and can actually get it done quickly) and a city that has a relatively happy and friendly people, reflected in the hospital staff. After working long hours in the hospital day after day, you really learn to appreciate friendly and helpful support staff, free indoor parking, relatively free flowing traffic, the ease in getting tickets to concerts/shows, not having to stand in line for everything, etc. Oh and the stunning city landscape certainly helps too.
Yes, NYC will always be the most exciting place to be. I go back whenever I can. Like millions others who no longer live in the city, I consider myself a New Yorker at heart. But Pittsburgh might be a better place to train for a career in medicine.

chicago is sometimes described as a big city with a small town feel. of course, i'm from chicago, so i'm a little biased. chicago has a variety of neighborhoods with their own personalities (eg lincoln park, gold coast, wrigleyville, river north, bucktown, wicker park) plus ethnic enclaves (little italy, pilsen, greektown, chinatown, koreatown, vietnamtown). decent nightlife, great skyline, lots of cultural stuff to do (museums, zoos, aquarium, lyric opera, symphony) - though i'm sure new york has more and probably more varied. chicago's probably also cheaper to live in.

Where do residents live? Do they mostly rent or buy houses? How long is the commute if you choose to buy a house (assuming you need to go out of the downtown/hospital area to buy a house).

NYC has some of the best things for free or at a significant discount including the culinary arts, museums and each borough a personality. 2 fabulous baseball teams, access to several different basketball teams, okay so the football is not too bad either(Giants), then there are the more civilized arts and theatre.

New York is a great place to live, if you can afford it, but it's a terrible, terrible place to train.
