Hi,

I wanted to take some more courses that would not aid me on the MCAT. Any suggestions?

I took History of the Crusades, but unfortunately it was reading/writing intensive, which I fear will be of some use on the MCAT. I was thinking some sort of arts/crafts class? What say you?

Several suggestions from personal experience:

1) Bioethics or biophilosophy (could make for some good conversation material at interviews)

2) Film and/or music class (Film Soundtrack Theory & History of Rock, excellent courses)

3) Take a language! (starting intensive Mandarin Chinese...in my senior year, but it sure would be helpful if I ever get a patient who is not a native English speaker)

I doubt a reading/writing intensive course will help. I would take a sociology class, or a photo/drawing class

How about figure drawing? Nothing to do with the MCAT, and you get to study and draw live naked models for a grade! What more do you want?

I would think it would help w/ VR and writing section.

Took sociology, was teh lamez. I got a B because I missed an in class assignment because I was sick, one of them sicks where it's pointless to see a doctor and pay.

That's a winner, except who wants to draw old man nuts?

haha its kind of cute you gave a serious response. I'm pretty sure the op made this thread as a facetious response to the thread "Best courses that help with the MCAT".

Hopefully they put a quota on the number of old man nuts required for your grade to allow more time to draw the coeds...

Investment and Portfolio Management
Managerial Economics and Business Strategy

Best two courses I ever took.

physics of beer pong. true story. although i guess for some it is a way to study for PS.

Introduction to prehistoric archaeology. We made obsidian tools in section today!

ethics, medical ethics & spanish👍
psych was pretty interesting, too

Oo, I also took a course in human relations. I thought it was interesting, but was pissed that I got a B lol

Psychology of Cults
Psychological Testing (sounds helpful, isn't)
Social Psychology
Child Psychology

Anything in psychology really.
In terms of uselessness, whether it be for the MCAT, or career prospects, you can't beat psychology classes. 😉

Runner up:
Underwater basket weaving

a soc class won't help with writing. lets look at it realistically. we learned the skills to write when we were in 3rd grade and have used those skills since then. One class, unless its strictly a writing class won't help. And, a soc class is helpful for providing an new way to think about the world

Quantum mechanics.

I'm not kidding either. You learn some really interesting principles and phenomena in that class.

Chaucer.

Seriously!

No takers? I guess I'm just a nerd, then. 😉

I've taken lots of "useless" classes in college. But the one least useful for both med school and MCAT would probably be.... *drumroll*

Domestic Policy Issues - Affordable Housing (beat that)

Psychology of Cults
Psychological Testing (sounds helpful, isn't)
Social Psychology
Child Psychology

Anything in psychology really.

Actually, psychology of cults sounds interesting, considering how many cults there are in every city of the US.

Archaeology is interesting but not mentally straining. Really any anthropology course that isn't physical anthropology related will be easy and pretty subjective.

Sociology of Religion: makes for great dinner conversation.

Sex-roles in Male/Female gendered relationships: the fetish chapter was slightly icky but utterly fascinating.

Materials science: really, what kind of doctor needs to know about silicon doping and band-gaps?

History of Western Music: Fantastic, all gregorian chants all the time.

 Funny thread. I can't think of any course that couldn't somehow help with the MCAT. Maybe a PE course, but only if there's no health related stuff that you have to read. Maybe an art or music course, but only if you don't have to learn any history or theory. I guess you're probably going to learn something no matter what you do though, unless you just don't take any class at all. 😛

We have a stress management course. You learn breathing techniques, sit in the dark and listen to calming music and get credits for it lol.

Molecular and Cellular Physiology. It doesn't really relate to the MCAT but damn it was an interesting class.

Some of my favorite courses were: Abnormal Psychology, History of Sports in America, Pre-Modern Theatre (analysis of plays starting with Ancient Greece up to Shakespeare), Greek Lit: Myth and Performance. I would recommend taking as many "fun" courses as your schedule allows, because I really didn't and I wish I had, especially art classes.

If your school offers yoga take it.

Especially if you're on a varsity sport team. The two semesters I took Yoga I felt less aches and pains than during any other year of Cross Country.

You'll also probably be one of three guys in the class, so if you look good in tights, work it! 😛

My favorites have been Holocaust history and Philosophy and Ethics of the Holocaust- can you tell what I have been researching the past year?

I am taking- Invertabrate Zoology (I think they are cool!), and Marine Biology (in Belize)... I have taken a lot that isn't useful for medical school. I want to be a doctor but I don't want to be a cookie cutter applicant- instead I want to get as much out of my education as possible for me while getting things that will help me with my lifelong career goals. Also, Im going to be taking Swahili next year and maybe medical spanish as well

I took that and failed.

I'm not kidding.

I would have failed that too- Im not much for dancing apparently... Im gonna take volleyball next semester just for a good reason for physical exercise that I can't argue with!

i took a class called north american geography. the students called it maps and beers as all we did was view slides of our great country. lights out means bottoms up at northwestern!

comm 101. You meet new people and have a lot of fun, and somewhere along the line you realize that your public speaking has actually improved.

I'd say that was the only class I ever took in college that has already helped me in real life.

Most of our models were young women apparently (very) comfortable with walking around topless.

Which I'm sure would've been great if I were male...

Although, I also had a great time in my Russian Lit. course. We spent the whole semester on War and Peace--it was pretty sweet.

maybe you can take a course in performance art. Here's an idea for your final project:

Would adcoms hold it against me if I dropped out??
