Best Laptop?

By all means, buy a Mac if you hate dealing with PCs, just don't try to convince PC users that they are "sheep." We are not the ones buying child-safe uniform models off the factory line. Using the more price efficient option, that is more customizable, to take advantage of a wider array of options is sort of the opposite of what sheep do. What sheep do is mindlessly regurgitate information that was already discussed.

I have had windows os laptops last me 6 years and desktops last me over 10. All of this is anecdotal

Got a Lenovo Yoga 930 and enjoying it so far. I wanted to try out a 2-in-1 and see how I like it.
I got a Lenovo miix 510 half a year ago to study for the mcat and so far I love it. It has the specs, design and performance of a Surface for half the price.

I suggest the Matebook, XPS 13 or 15, Macbook pro 2015 or Mi notebook Pro

I didn't mean to infer that PC users were sheep, but I did mean to infer that Apple as a whole are Lions. They completely changed the tech world as we know if merely years after almost going out of business. They created a cult worth almost a trillion dollars by creating products that almost everyone LOVES and don't mind paying extra for. If that doesn't scream alpha to you, then I don't know what does.

Honestly, haters will always talk. But I'm not sure why anyone associated with Apple would ever even seem to care. All they have to do is look at where the company stands in relation to literally every other company in the world (Apple is #1 according to Forbes) to see that no one can even touch them.

You sound delusional. None of your posts have spoken a word about substance, only image. You said it best with the word "cult."

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out which laptop would be best to buy for med school in fall. Please let me know if you have any recommendations or any laptops I should avoid! Thanks so much!
The latest Surface Pro. I have the "New surface pro" which is technically the 5th I believe and it is AMAZING for powerpoint note taking and pretty much everything you could ever want in a computer.

That’s pretty much the theme of this thread. “What do you like about Macs?” “Uhhhhh it looks pretty?”

Do you think this is good as your primary laptop? I'm mainly worried about not having a hinge making it difficult to use while laying down or in other positions when not seated at a flat table. Otherwise I really liked it and was considering one. Much cheaper than the surface book and still gives similar functionality.

With the fully retractable back of the Surface, you can use it in any position you'd like. I've studied on my couch, in my bed, car, table, etc. and never had a problem with it! The best accessory is to get used to using the Surface Pen that comes with it, especially for note taking!

You want substance? How about really the only proxy for a companies success. Money. One trillion dollars. That’s all that needs to be said.

Apart from that, the MacOS coupled with outstanding durability and comfortable Apple eco-system is what makes them who they are. They make products that people LOVE. That’s why they are at the top. SCOREBOARD.

I think if you should've started off with the second part of this comment.

But yeah I agree MacBooks do last a long time, most of my friends have had one for 3 to 4 years and still runs great.

When all you can do is browse Safari and and play all 5 stone-age games developed for it you better hope it lasts long time considering what you payed for it.

haha I don't actually own one because they're too expensive but i have never heard any complaints from my friends that have one. My laptop went strong for 3 years and then started dying during the fourth. I also paid like 1/3 of the price of the macbook though so that is important to take into account. If I bout two more of my laptops that would add up to 9 years lol. So to me it's not worth the cost but I can see why it is for those who have the money.

I have the money too, well my parents do. Same thing. But the point just because you have the money doesn’t mean you should spend it on overpriced things. Apple charges more because it can, not because it’s actually better. With the money you save by not getting the touchbar gimmick you can buy 3 of these which is considered by nearly everyone as the best productivity mouse on the market.

How are you supposed to flex without the Touch Bar?

In all honesty, I used to be a windows guy growing up. I never did anything intense with my computers, just basic use tbh. Still, I had 3 different window's PC's break down on me within a 2 year frame. 1 HP, 1 Dell, 1 Lenovo. Arguably 3 of the best Windows PC's. I then switched over to Mac right before starting college, and my Mac has never had a single problem over the past 6+ years. Literally runs as good as out of the box. That is why I support them so much. I have heard many many similar stories as well.

With a menstrual pad magic mouse 2. It literally forces your hand muscles to flex because of how unergonomic it is.

Yup. I took the majority of my notes by importing the lecture slides into OneNote and drawing on them with the pen. Very easy to organize and cross reference.

This is a pretty subjective topic and it depends on your computing needs beyond medical school, but if you can afford it, i would get the new MacBook Pro... when you are buying Apple products, you are also buying Apple customer service and the Apple experience... when something goes wrong, you have a physical location you can go to, if you need tutorials, they offer free classes... if you have an HP and something goes wrong, you will probably have to ship it and wait weeks for it to get repaired. Apple also tends to last longer and their operating systems are more user friendly than windows

The new MBP isn’t even as good as the previous version. The cooling is terrible and it throttles the CPU. Apple would rather your computer be just a wee bit quieter than actually getting the best performance out of the processor. I bet next year they’ll turn the fan speeds up and release it as a new version for even more money.

That’s only a problem with the new i9 cpu model. I don’t think a majority of people are even getting the 15 inch, and if they are, they sure don’t need to spec it up to $3000. Absolutely useless and a waste of money unless you’re editing 4K or red footage. Even then, the baseline 13 inch MacBook Pro with quad core processor should be more than capable of handling 4K.

Do any people with the macs that have the USB-C port find that limiting? I bought a macbook pro in 2010 and it has taken me through some high school, college, and then some. I would loooove to keep it going into school but this 4 GB of RAM is really killing me and so is the low battery life. Originally planned on buying another macbook pro but I feel like the functionality of the new ones isn't what it used to be? Pretty over priced, can't upgrade parts because everything is attached to motherboard (I replaced my fans and CD drive with SSD in my 2010 MBP), and the strict use of the usb-c ports? What about headphones? HDMI? A portable mouse? (I have an ergonomic one that I use)

The baseline 13 inch at 1299 (1249 after student discount) is not overpriced in my opinion. The specs may not be terribly high, but for what its worth, if u wanted a macbook pro 8 years ago with the specs it has now it would cost about the same.. so Apple has not increased their price. The usbc thing is very overhyped.. you can buy dongles very cheap on amazon that solve any issue you may have. You can get an all in one dongle that has USB, HDMI, and basically anything else you would need. The computer itself still has the headphone jack, and most mice now adays run on bluetooth.

I should mention that I'm exclusively looking at 15". 13 inches are too small for me, I do some lighting gaming on my laptop and I plan on continuing to that. 15" with at least Corei7 and 16 GB of ram. Does carrying around tons of adapters get tiring/annoying to always have it? For undergrad, I took my laptop pretty much everywhere and I assume it would be the same in professional school. So I am concerned about bringing all the adapters everywhere with me too.

With my previous laptop I was able to update parts, but with the new ones you can't update hardware parts of the laptop, so I'm inclined to get a laptop with more storage space at the beginning than wish I did a year or two down the road, which also increases the cost.

For the MBP, it's a little bit of the cost, but I think the thing that is making me the most apprehensive is the new usb-c (exclusive) ports, lack of ability to upgrade for the price of the laptop. Because it's not just buying a macbook, it's also buying applecare, all of now needed necessary dongles. And I don't want to replace the stuff I already have like my mouse because it's not usc-b/bluetooth.

You could get a decent desktop and a windows laptop for the price of a MacBook. The desktop can be for your gaming and home needs (probably won't need to spend more than 800 on one) and get yourself an Asus zenbook for a light travel companion. They go anywhere from 500 to over 1000 and since you'll have a desktop you probably won't need much more than the 600 dollar range. If you have the money for a MacBook then you might as well just buy two windows. The desktop can be upgraded easily especially if you build your own and will last you a long time.
