Hello everyone,
Starting this thread so that we all can discuss which loan programs are good, bad or best! There will be some programs that suit one set of individulas better then another ,so please state your reasons for choosing it over others. All those who have already taken loans can give great insight to those of us who are still doing research on what program to choose.
My take on this so far:
At the moment the Citiassist loan for health professionals looks good to me.
Why?cause it offers competitive rates and incentives and the most attractive for me is i may not need a GC/Citizen as cosigner as long as we have good credit history (i have written to them and will confirm the above).

Thanks,
G.P

Hi G.P,
I called the citi today and they told me that if you applying for a loan(health professional loan for example)as an international student, you will be REJECTED regardless of your credit history.
Based on my best knowledge, the only loan company that accepts international students without a co-signer is access group BUT you must have a good credit history for at least 3 years.
If you asked for what I prefer,I think that Citi and Access group are better than others for many reasons:lower interest rates, easier process, more welcomed by finacial aid offices in major dental schools and that gives you less hassel and headache.
The best for you.

hey G.P
for international students , I think there is not much choice for private loans if you are not a permanent resident or a us citizen,
the three most popular are citiassit, sallie mae and access group
citi-assist and sallie mae give you loans if you can find a co-signer who is a us citizen or green card holder
the interest rate varies depending on your co-signer's credit history
they also ask for a valid student visa before sanctioning the loans
when i called access group , they told me they don't need a co-signer but a sponsor
sponsor is differant in the sence , the access group will ask him to apply for a loan on your behalf and will give the loan to him rather than you
I am residing in canada, and was lucky enough to get loans from royal bank of canada which has just started this program to fund canadian residents or citizens to study in medical or dental schools
the loan is given to me as a line of credit , I was given 150K in canadian dollars which is roughly around 120K in us dollars, and the money was given right away, the interest rate is canadian prime plus one percent.(canadian prime is currently 4.5%)
they gave me the loan on my credit history in canada and so was not asked to produce any co-signer or a guarantor
citiassist and salliemae will deposit your tution fees directly with the university and give you the living expence term by term
i don't think citibank or salliemae will give you loans on your credit history if you are not a us citizen or a green card holder

Hi,
Which is the best loan if you are a green card holder ? Does anyone here have any idea how bank one loans are?

If you are a green card holder, you can go for federal loans like the Stafford loan.

this is wht i found out till now. i am on h4 ,i know tht u r too,gp. we dont have a credit history . so someone has to cosign either the husband or somebody else.we talked to almost all possible lenders but till now the answer is the cosigner should be a permanent resident or citizen regardless of how good the credit history is.(i mean ur husband's if u r not a permanent resident)
whn we talked to citibanlk they said the same thing . pls let know if u get a loan without a cosigner.

Hi all,

I will be applying for F1 as I am still in India. Thankfully I have green card co-signer. When is the earliest one can apply for a loan? Is it 3 months before start of the program? Is the orientation included in this? That is if orientation begins in July end, can we apply for loan in April end? Do I have to have a student visa F1 before my loan gets approved? It is all so confusing. Anybody who has gone through the process of Student Visa and loans please help!
Thanks in advance

Thank you everyone for contributing ,keep the info pouring in.I have not heard from Citiassist yet,but will let you know Ann_03 when i do.

Hey guys,

My question...

Can an cosigner(who is a US citizen) be eligible if he was residing in India for the last 2 yrs (on project basis)...but will be back this august to the US??

u will have to ask the lenders tht. but if ur cosigner has a good credit history in the us, i dont see any problem. but u should check with ur lender.

hi MTJ
thanks for posting this new information about Global Student Loan Corporation
but unfortunately UCSF is not listed in their list of schools eligible for loans
I called them and they said they will consider UCSF in the near future
the interest rate they charge is not bad ,it is prime +1%
Maybe we should talk to UCSF financial advisor and ask them to get UCSF listed with global student loan corportation

Iam so glad this thread is getting a good response.
After getting acceptance LOAN is the biggest thing on everyone's mind .
Good work GP 🙂 👍

I heard back from Citiassist, and yes we NEED TO HAVE A CITIZEN/GC as cosigner 🙄 .Well access and GSL now need a close look.

hi G.P
have you tried MEFA since I assume you have been accepted at boston university
because they do have a loan program for people going to schools in Massachusetts

Hi Nimesh ,

i think it shouldn't be much of a problem for UCSF to get listed because i noticed on the GSL site UCLA is listed ....both UCLA and UCSF are part of the UC Regents ...which means payment will be to the UC regents I THINK ! so maybe if some one talks to UCSF that might be a good option .

As for me i'm leaning towards getting my loan from citi bank ... i am a resident but my credit history is only 1 year long ...most Lenders need cosigner if the credit history is less than 2 years ! though citi bank doesn't need a cosigner if you are a resident which means i will not need a cosigner if i get my loan from them ... though i want to double check on that ! does anyone know anything about that ? ... well i was also wondering can't we apply for the loan earlier ? i mean UCSF financial says that we can't really apply for the private loan earlier than 2 months before school .....because lenders won;t accept giving the loan and because tuition has yet not been confirmed for 2005/2006 ...does anyone know anything about that ?

Hi G.P,
it means some people who are on certain immigration status, like asylum, people who are waiting to get their Green Card(I-550 I think),People who are already have Green Card.
People who are on F-1 Visa are NOT eligible noncitizen.
Good luck
