Does anyone have some recommendations for good magazines to help a pre-med keep up to date with advances in science and particularly with latest issues relating to medicine?

Nothing along the lines of medical journals requring an MD to crack open the cover, but good reading to keep on top of things...

I've stuck with TIME magazine for a few years and it keeps me up to date on tons of stuff in addition to medicine. Every now and then, they'll do a feature article on something scientific or medical. If that's not what you're looking for, I would just pick up a Scientific American every now and then. Or, I also like to go to the Health section of CNN.com. Pretty up-to-date there.

is it good prep to read lots of science journals/medical journals for mcats and med. school, etc?

I was told that keeping in touch with the latest issues and developments in science and medicine is a good idea. I doubt it would help much for the MCATS, but I think you should be somewhat educated on these things for when you get to interviews.

I like Time, but I'm hoping to find something a little more targeted to medicine/science.

ama news is pretty good to scan regularly. AMA site also has lots of position papers to give their perspective on major issues.

NEJM and JAMA are good to scan - regularly have opinion pieces on issues...I go to library every couple of months and scan past issues.

MSJAMA is good too. (http://jama.ama-assn.org/ms_current.dtl). Look at past editions (http://jama.ama-assn.org/misc/studentjamapastissues.dtl)
Not really "news" but interesting reads - did they stop publishing?

As issues pop up (i.e., stem cell research, euthanasia), do internet searches to learn more.

I actually don't like CNN, TIME or mainstream sources. Very limited perspective and too simple for serious pre-med or med student, imo.

My favorite is called SEED.

I also like NEJM and the AMA website. Lots of good reads. I enjoy the position papers on certain ethical issues. I just turn to Time and CNN for quick reads when my time is crunched and I can't watch the news. Not in-depth sources or very interesting perspectives but lets you know what's going on when you have 5 minutes before you're out the door:) For those of you who want some serious medical or science journals to subscribe to, try browsing a used bookstore. I was in half price books yesterday and they had a medical/health/science magazine section where you can buy recent issues at half the publishers price. Ebay is also a good place to browse magazines by topic.

Not really useful. Won't really help on the MCAT or in medical school. I concur with other poster that you should be up to date on medical issues for interviews.

I have Reuters Health News, AP health News and AFP Health news on my yahoo home page. They list continually updated headlines with links. Good easy, quick way to to keep to date on major studies and world health issues.

For the MCAT Verbal try reading the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, etc. to help your brain adjust to that type of reading.

Hey, try premed life magazine, It's an online magazine that's basically like twitter. My campus is doing it
