I am a PGY-1, and almost finished with the dreaded intern year. I am trying to strategically plan out how best to read through the basic science series, since I have heard this is a MUST for every ophth. resident to read through each year. As I understand it, there are twelve volumes, each one approximately 400 pages long. I have heard that the avg. ophth. resident should spend about 2 hours a day reading. Is this practical, and if you do this will you get through the entire BSS in one year. Also, is this the best thing to do for OKAPS? I know that OKAPs are a ways away, but I am trying to be proactive rather than playing catchup in march. Also, any other books anyone could recommend for OKAP prep would be helpful. Thanks.

Dedicate 1-2 hours every day. The BSS is huge and difficult to digest.

We should really combine our efforts and write a review book for residents similar to First Aid series. Anyone interested?

Definitely sounds like a great idea, though I will say that the board review book by Cherns and Zegans does a great job of summarizing most od the important info to know in one book.

Let's write a better book and charge less! 👍

Although it is a bit late for first yr ophtho residents, if you are still in your intern year you may consider this. Our PD recommended that we get through the entire "BS" series(as I like to refer to it) in the first 6 months of residency. If you do the math, that is about 2 books a month. It is very difficult to actually complete, but it can be done. If you subscribe to this method then you can use the next 3 months to do OKAP study/review questions. If you are looking for good OKAP scores to impress your faculty this way seemed to work well for our class of residents. No matter how you study best, just like always, you get out what you put in. Good luck.
Although I'm not quite to the point of writing a review book, it does sound like a good idea. I still have my First Aid for step I....it has such a special place in my heart.😎

At the beginning of my first year, I simply figured out how many pages I had to read per day to finish the whole series in time for OKAPS (with a couple of weeks to spare to review). I think it was around 20 pages a day. Obviously, there were some days where I had to do a lot more, to make up for days I slacked off or was too busy. After that, I still had time to go through Chern (question book), and MEEI review. This worked better for me than doing by book, since the books are of such different lengths.
