I decided to take DAT before taking orgo and bio. will schaum's outline of biology do the job without me going into the textbooks? what is the best adridged replacement for orgo textbook? your input would be appreciated

Why would you want to take the DAT before taking two of your most basic science classes?

To answer your question, I would start with Kaplan's DAT study guide to get an idea of what you will need to learn for all of the subjects. For organic, use Kaplans Organic Chemistry Edge study guide, which if you can master you can do well on the DAT's organic section. Your going to need to learn ALOT of Biology so use as many resources as you can get a hold of. I suggest getting a good textbook such as Campbell's. Good luck.

yes. I am a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, and it's gonna be pretty tough for me to take 30 credits a semster next year to fulfill the pre req by the time i graduate.

if i were you, id take 2 bio classes and 2 ochem classes during the summer. do bio 1 and ochem 1 during the first summer session and bio 2 and ochem 2 during the second. then take the DAT right before fall semester. i took the DAT then and my scores got to the schools faster than my application (which was submitted in july). id start studying bio now though because 2 courses wont prepare you enough.

I highly recommend the Kaplan bluebook...it does a great job of reviewing basic biology and ochem. If you study that book and know it front to back, you should be able to break 20s on your DAT. I haven't had any experience with Schaums but its got a reputuation as a very thorough biology review so that might be helpful as well. Good luck and study hard...youll be just fine.

You're going to take the DAT without the basic classes and you don't even intend to use textbooks. Nice 🙂 . I may be wrong but most DAT prep materials give you info based on the assumption that you at least have the basic classes. If you can I'd suggest you spend the summer taking at least bio 1&2 and Org 1 (assuming your major requires you to have chem 1&2 and you already do).

I will not say it's absolutely impossible for you to do well AND be competitive without the classes or textbooks, you may be a genius. Whatever you chose i wish you luck and hey, trying won't hurt. You may pleasantly suprise yourself. :luck:

I wouldnt take the DAT without taking ochem. Its gonna be extremely hard to teach it to yourself and will seem like a foreign language. Its not worth doing poorly on the DAT because even if you can take it over from what ive heard the schools still see all your scores.

Trick to ochem is really pushing electrons, I have a book that i used during my compressed ochem class and it made all the difference. If you want a copy of it PM and i can probably send u a copy of some stuff for cost.

I took the DAT when I was halfway through Orgo II and had not yet taken any biology. I checked out two different bio textbooks from my University library and studied those myself. I also used the Kaplan blue book and practice tests to prepare. I scored a 20 in bio and a 25 in Ochem. I probably could have done better in bio if I had waited to take the courses, but I wanted to apply this cycle, so I put in the effort by myself. It can be done, but takes a lot of hardwork. Good luck.

wow. you have to be supermotivated to do well without taking those two classes. especially bio qs are kind of random so not fully knowing the material can hurt you a lot. try to study from kaplan blue book and campbell's bio book. if you know everything from those two books, you should be fine. For ochem, it is more conceptual. if you understand how things work and memorize some common reactions, you should be fine. good luck to you!

biology is such a diverse subject that i dont see how you can be 100% prepared for it unless you've taken histology, physiology, microbiology, genetics, etc etc etc

thanks for your replies. I go to a huge school where gchem and orgo classes are normally packed with 200+ kids, and I found lectures not helpful at all especially when professors digress from time to time. I can say 95% of classes I've take up to this point were virtually independent study.
