Best route to PhD for a medical doctor in the UK

Hi! I am a final year medical student at an EU university (my degree is a 6 years MD, not MBBS) and I am interested in moving to the UK for my specialty training. I would like to gain a PhD because I am highly interested in an academic position (i.e. eventually become a professor). Is there anyone who can propose the "best time" to do so? Which route did you/or would you take and how? Thanks in advance!
