I think autoclavable clogs are the way to go, both for comfort as well as cleanliness. I still have the pair of Birkenstock Super Birki clogs that I wore during med school and residency. They're virtually indestructible.
 
its a matter of preference really..

I wear merrells which suit me just fine..

first off, if you are standing "the majority of the time", you're definitely doing something wrong. you're only true worry is that your ass doesn't get too fat from sitting most of the day. you can easily (and very quickly) hide 15-20lbs in a pair of scrubs without barely blinking. remember the "freshman fifteen"? most of the female surgical/ob-gyn/anesthesia interns i've seen seem to be suffering from the "first-year forty-five". some of them used to be quite hot this past july. it's just sad.

best shoes? the most comfortable for your foot. for me, they are a cheap-ass pair of slip-ons i bought at a bass outlet store. i've found that running shoes - multiple brands tried - typically suck. then again, this was when i was actually on the floor on other services doing more walking. suprisingly uncomfortable to wear all day. too much support or something.

kangaroos. i prefer velcro to laces. its hard to tie shoelaces at 6 am.

what shoes minimize low back pain? the clogs i have now suck ass cuz when i wear them my back seems to hurt after about an hour of standing... not lookin forward to that during intern year...
 
Danskos.... the best money you'll ever spend.

If you have any doubts look around your hospital at the surgery and ob-gyn folks and I bet a good percentage of them have danskos on.

Merrell ventilated slip-ons or mocs.

Good ventilation for foot sweat. No laces. Inexpensive.

Best. OR. Shoe. Evar.

Dansko's are the best, I agree. For the first time I don't even think about my feet after hours and hours of standing.
 
do you think the ventilation of the Merrell's mentioned would allow fluids to seep in? I don't particularly want blood/miscellaneous fluids on my feet. Wondered if you've had that problem. If not, the ventilation feature seems nice.

Heeed! We just finished our GI unit in histology, and our Scottish professor (complete w/accent) looked exactly like the dad character Mike Myers played in "So I Married An Axe Murderer!" I would have given anything to hear him say "Heeed! Paperr...now!" :laugh: :laugh:

Loved my ventilated Merrell's until one night in the unit when I was placing a central line. I felt something wet and ... the patient's NGT was leaking on/in my shoe. Unfortunately, had to wear it for the next 12 hours. Never really got the smell out... 👎
 
In my first job, the best shoes were definitely a good pair of running shoes since I did a lot of supervision.

Now, they just need to be comfortable.

how much are those badboys? i may be able to continue moonlighting as a foot model if i buy those.
 
no joke...

i actually saw a residnet bring one of those foot massaging things (ie with teh water) and have his foot in them during the case (well not the whole time obviously).

I think it's a great friggin idea. might wanta get one of those bad boys :laugh:

One day, as the shoes become more and more popular (God only knows why), someone you know will walk into an MRI machine and the magnetic field takes quite kindly to the coil portion of the shoe.

Very amusing when it happens. Hard to run away when you feet are being pulled out from under you.

Several of the surgery residents at my institution wear those. They're really comfortable once they are broken in.

BINGO! They are the $hit! I literally wore a pair out my intern year & now have two pr I use for the OR & on-call. Initially, until you get used to them & they are broken in, lots of walking can be somewhat uncomfortable at the end of a call shift. But, once they (or you) are broken in - I can walk miles, seemingly, or stand for hours without a hitch!

Oh...and you can save a ton of $$ by buying them off of EBay. Have purchased both of my current pair there. They were both exactly as the ones you pay top-dollar for at a retail shop. I have the 'professionals' - normally ~$110 - paid $70 including S&H. My other pair are the nicer soled ones similar to the 'professional' model - normal retail ~$130 - paid $100 incl S&H.

And, for those of us who must do call...like there are many who do not...do yourself a favor & buy slip-on footwear! It SUCKS to try & tie your shoes when you've only been asleep for an hour - in between pages - after being in the OR for HOURS & getting a STAT airway or CODE BLUE page.

boots in the OR - wow. i'm a native texan with a few pairs of boots including a pair of redwings but i can't imagine anything more uncomfortable for the OR 🙂

my father-in-law(retired anesthesia) had an anethesiologist work for him who would always wear boots in the OR. he od'd on fentanyl and was rushed to Ben Taub where the ED folks found my father-in-laws business card in his wallet so they called him. turns out he was snaking fentanyl in his boots daily...

my dad(ophtho) also had one of his anesthesiologists wear boots in the OR to cover up his fentanyl injection sites

obviously, i would feel like i was up to something if i ever wore my redwings in the OR 😱

I just put on two of those bootie covers and go shoeless. I feel like I'm in my kitchen at home.

Crocs. I've tried many slip-ons and t shoes. The Crocs are light and have great cushion.

There is no right answer to the question asked. The most comfortable footware will differ from individual to individual. Cheap Quarks work for me. wear a pair of Timberlake boots that's very comfy,for me. I have a pair of Clarks that gets a lot of attention. Someone aked me if I wore my bowling shoes to work. They are comfy and I think that they look cool. My most comfy OR footware consist of a pair of Quarks that cost less than $40.

When I was at Texas Heart, one of the deftest heart surgeons on the planet wore white leather cowboy boots in the OR.

A dude that can do one-anesthesia-page CABGs can wear whatever the f uk he wants on his feet.

Here in Texas many of the surgeons and anesthesia guys wear cowboy boots. People claim they are comfortable but I'll stick to my Danskos. 2 years and still holding up strong.

We'll see how they survive internship next year. I'll definately need something comfortable to wear while standing for hours listening to Medicine attendings babble on and on and on during rounds. Oh the horror.
 
I tried on so me Danskos the other day and boy were they comfortable! I went ahead and bought them, so we'll see how they hold up...hopefully like most of you have said they would...thanks for all of your input!
 
My wife thinks Dansko(s) look fruity. Almost bought a pair saturday but she nixed the deal.
 
Maybe your wife has never been in a hospital. Have you seen some of the stuff people wear? Plus, how cool can you look with a surgical cap, mask, safety glasses, and a pair of pajamas?? Plus, with ugly shoes she won't have to worry about nurses hitting on you 😉

I have to second that motion....my wife hates them, but I told her that she's not the one wearing them and plus, they were comfortable, that's all I care about.
 
I see a lot of folks walking around with crocs on in the hospital. They have holes in the top of them. Are those allowed in the OR? What about fluids or dropped sharps?
