best time to arrange subIs?

The 3 programs I am doing aways at waited until late June early July to get back with me, in order to fill their own school's schedule for the year. That being said, I made sure my complete application for the spot was in before this deadline, so I was basically first in line. FWIW - I got all 3 spots I wanted in my time frame (Sept, Oct, Nov)

Hi all,

I am a third year interested in Ob-Gyn and am trying to plan my 4th year schedule. I came across this thread and was wondering if it is common to do three aways(!), like the previous poster?

I was also wondering, would it be a bad idea to do an early away - for example, in June of my third year? I would have already completed my core rotation and an elective or sub-I at my home program by that time, and was thinking it would be nice to visit a program when the interns were more settled and experienced that they will be in July/August, but I don't want the away program to completely forget me by the time I apply!

Thanks!

there are three reasons to do a subI
1. the experience: if you're just doing an away just to get the experience of working in a different setting or at a particular hospital, then it shouldnt be a problem if u do it in june.
2. LOR: if what u want out of the away rotation is a LOR, i dont think it matters which months u do it
3. Interview offer: I wouldnt do an away in June if it was an audition elective, most PDs wouldnt even be looking at applications till about 4 months down the line from june. It just seems like a really long time. maybe if u did a subspecialty elective and worked with just one attending, then theres a better chance that they might remember you.

just my $0.02
