So, it has been about 4 weeks since I asked one of my attending to write me letter of recommendation. He still hasn't written one as of today.

What is the best way to gently remind him? I know I am not in any hurry at this point but I would love to have him write a letter before he possibly forgets about me.

Thanks.

When you asked for a LOR, did you give this attending physician a copy of your personal statement and CV? If not, then present him/her with these documents, a cover letter that explains your career plans. When you present documents (in an envelope or folder), they tend to be a little more memorable than a verbal request or e-mail. Be sure to update (after you have dropped off your documents)this attending with your progress in residency application (drop an e-mail with that says something like "I just spoke with the department chair about various programs etc and mentioned that you were writing my LOR'). These kinds of things keep you in mind, make the letter easier to write and get you what you need in a timely fashion. The documents help to jog memory too.

I would send a friendly email reminder, not confront them to their face and accuse them of not writing the letter, and be super polite and use an excuse like, "I haven't received LOR yet, and started wondering if you need more background like a C.V. thank you again for helping me by writing this letter! Or more the direct approach is to cat-nap their pet and send a polaroid in the mail of "Fluffy" saying you want the LOR in 96 hours or you put Fluffy in the freezer, actually works pretty well! (heh heh)

Send them a Thank-You card. That always gets the ball rolling.

A thank you card written in the past tense will create even more guilt i.e. one that implies that the letter is already written.

Hi
