Hi everyone,

I was wondering what the best method is to update a school on an accepted manuscript? I recently got the publication accepted but I don't have any concrete proof of my authorship. All I have is an email that the journal sent my PI (forwarded to me) notifying him/her of the acceptance. The only place that my name appears as an author is on the manuscript that we submitted but that can just easily be changed by anybody to make themselves an author... The journal didn't send us a copy of the manuscript or include the author list on the email.

I'm planning to just forward the email to admissions with a note about my authorship and include a copy of the manuscript that I have on my computer. Will schools believe me or do I need solid proof? In my mind, somebody can easily adjust the manuscript to make themselves an author. It's kind of an important addition to my application so I'd hate to let something so major go. :lame:

They will believe you. No one is going to lie about authorship on a paper since that would be grounds for rescinding an acceptance offer or even tossing you out of medical school years later.

True, I don't think it happens often. It just seems very unofficial and unprofessional but this might just be me overanalyzing things. So you think the forwarded email and the manuscript attachment is sufficient?

A paper on which I am an author was just accepted today. I just sent out a short notice about the paper and a couple of sentences about my part in the project. If they grant me an interview, maybe I'll bring along the paper.

Actually, it would be kind of sketchy to forward the email or attach the manuscript. The manuscript should be somewhat confidential before it is officially published, so you shouldn't be emailing it out to people, even adcoms.

That's a good point, that makes it even more unprofessional of me. I guess I'll just tell them the title and author list of the paper and the contact info of the corresponding author and hope that they trust me.

Congrats on your pub btw. 🙂

Thanks, you too. Yeah adding the contact info of the corresponding author is a good idea, gonna have to add that onto the other update letters.
