Hey all SDN members,
I am in big big confusion here..I am a foreign trained dentist with nbde part 1 score of 83..so i have not been lucky untill now to get into any dds/dmd program..even though all other stats are good...like toefl 101 and 7 yrs of continuous DA experience in USA and some research work(not significant though)..okay so my confusion is after very hard work I got adm into Fellowship Program(though I will be paying 30,000$ as fees) of Advance Periodontology and Implantology in UCONN...My only pride to get into this school is that it is State School with lots of emphasis on research and clinical training and a very intensive and didactic curiculum..(as mentioned by program director)He literally told me that I am lucky to get into this competitive program bcos of my dedication to dentistry and visa status(GC Holder)lolz...anyways the real deliemma is this program is from 1st July to 30th June (full one year)..and as mentioned very intensive one which might get delayed but surely will not complete before that..as we might have to do lots n lots of research n clinics in 2nd half of the program..So If I accept this then it will surely look good on my CV and stats to apply for DDS/DMD following year...but I checked most of the schools International dentist program starts In March/April or June....(so I wont be finishing my current program till then and so I wont get accepted for the advance standing program..What should I do???Pls suggest me....thanks a lot...
My 2 cents is that you should go for the fellowship without any second thought. Its very difficult to get into these fellowships especially when u r also fighting along with the regular dds students. Also most dentists whether regular or FTD, usually for an implant course sooner or later in their career because during ur dental schooling all u do is the restorative aspect of implant and not implant surgery as such!!! Another thing is that Uconn is one of the best schools in the whole US and getting accepted there for a fellowship is yes a very big thing.
Coming to the DDS/ DMD, since you are Green card, you will have a much higher edge for going into advanced standng at Uconn itself. They feed you into the program and they take GC only!!! And fellowship will weigh a lot!!! So I think its worth the money and time as well!!!
