Hey I have a question. If your not going to be a doctor, what the hell else is there to do? I'm a bio major, recently graduated, and I have med school on the brain all the time. WHy? Who the hell knows. B/c my brother is surgeon/big time pompous jerk, and the pressure is killing me folks.
So many of us are dying to get into med school and bust our asses. I commend all of you who are sincere. But I am doing this b/c of all of this pressure. Pressure coming from you people, whom I'm trying to be competative with, and my dear older brother.. "the DOctor" Help me, b/c I am not super intelligent and I have to work so hard to do this crap, and I dont feel like wasting my 20's away being tired and miserable.
What else can I do besides medicine or PA or anything like that with a biology degree? Work at borders?
Seriously though, any suggestions for some one like me, I want to start living, making a few bucks, and see whats out there for me, instead of having my head crammed in this book and that book, frettin' about MCATS.
Help?
😱

seriously, you will need to continue school to do anything worthwhile. It is tough to get a decent paying job with a Bachelor's in bio.

teaching - you could probably start now in a program that pays for your Master's in Education while you work.
lab tech

Get a PhD
Go into Pharmacy, Physical Therapy or other allied health

If you hate it so much forget about medical school. F@*k what everyone else wants you to do, do what makes you happy. If being a doctor is not for you, then so be it. You can pursue a masters. I'm currently working on a Ph.D. in engineering and I've noticed alot of biomedical engineering programs do reserach in conjuction with bio departments. Doing masters research in an area like this could be interesting, it would only be a 2 year degree (depending on the program) and there are alot of good paying jobs when you get out. That's just one suggestions, but if you look around I'm sure you'll find some kind of program that interests you.

First, family pressure is not an acceptable reason to choose a career. Medicine involves 4 years of school and 3-5 years of training. The training period involves 80 hour work weeks, so basically every waking hour. If it's not what you really want to do (as opposed of being pressured to do), you will either not make it or end up hating it. So unless it's something you are excited about, do not go down this road. Second, there are a billion jobs out there for which a science degree would be helpful, ranging from teaching, to various non-physician health related positions (PT, nutrition, public health, PA, audiology), to law (patent), to scientific research (eg. pharm). Some require further training, others don't. I suggest finding yourself a good career advisor (at your school or elsewhere) to give you advice.

Forget med school.

Apply to law school.

Become a malpractice attorney and sew the pi$$ out of your older brother.

You're welcome. 😉

Oh man, I stand corrected. 😴

Alright, well I guess he can represent you after his older brother botches that surgery to reduce your hypertrophied anal sphincter. 😛 🙄

Or, if he really is intent on "sewing" his brother, he could always try to become a seamstress or something. 😉

(I apologize; I really couldn't help myself...)

You're a lawyer, I'll forgive you.

Only kidding! 🙂

To the OP: something like 90% of people in the workforce are doing jobs that have nothing to do with their college degree. I'm a good example; I was a history major as an undergrad, then ended up working with computers for five years before deciding I wanted to go into medicine. If you like bio and want to do something with it, then there are plenty of careers out there (teaching, lab work, etc. I have one friend who was a bio major in college and now makes beaucoup $$ as a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company). But if you were only in bio to begin with because you felt pressured to be pre-med, don't feel boxed in now. You can do literally ANYTHING.

Try this "future life/recall" exercise. I find it helpful to periodically pinpoint and re-validate my options and choices.
-Dave

First, find yourself a comfortable place where you can relax and think things through without distractions. Get away from the TV, remove the iPod headphones, turn off the stereo.

Then, imagine it is the future and you are a senior citizen sitting on the porch of your (ideal) house with your spouse or partner by your side. Start reminiscing about your life to date; go over all the things you did as a child, as a teenager, in college. Recall all the things you did in your 20's, your 30's, your 40's, your 50's, your 60's, your 70's, your 80's (hey, you're supposed to be a really old senior citizen!).

As you do these recalls, ask yourself, "What did I regret not doing at age XX?"
Would you regret NOT being a <insert the job or activitiy you are considering doing>. For example: would you regret NOT being a doctor (or lawyer, plumber, photopgrapher, nurse, street sweeper, web designer, etc.) You can also apply this exercise to activities: For example: Would you regret NOT going to medical school (or NOT climbing Mt. Everest, NOT going to grad school, NOT bungie-jumping off the Royal Gorge bridge, etc.?)

If the answer is yes (it may physically such as a twinge of regret or remorse rather than words), then your answer is "I need to do that or else I'll regret it."

Try this exercise periodically as you go about your daily life, perhaps every few years to check that you are fulfilling your truest desires and aspirations.
