I want to take a bio chemistry course during this summer before I start the pharm program. I was trying to search for a class, but no one offers it in the area I am in during summer. Do you guys know of any online bio chem classes? I do not need a lab since I am doing it not for a credit, but just for knowledge
I checked university of phoenix online-no luck 🙁
thank you

Why not just buy a biochem book and read through it over the summer? Biochem is pretty straightforward, more like just in depth biology to me.

I think I probably will buy a book and try to focus on stuff.
Although, usually if I don't go to lectures where the material is being taught, I have a hard time getting an important info out of a book, and start focusing on small stuff.
What do you guys think is important in bio chemistry and what I should focus on.
For example,
1) do I need to know structures of all 20 amino acids?
2) Do I need to know all the enzymes and how they work in a body?
3) do I need to know the reactions of amino acids with something lese?
4) do I need to know structures of proteins?
5) do I need to know sterols?
Do I need to memorize all those structures or just be able to recognize them?
Could you please give me a general idea on what I need to klnow for a pharm program....

Can't tell you what you should know for a pharmacy program since I am not in one. For my school biochem I consisted of a study of the four main macromolecules and enzymes. This went in depth in proteins, lipids, DNA, and carbs. Of course proteins are made of amino acids and DNA/RNA are made of nucleic acids those were in there. We did have to know the 20 amino acids pretty much for the charge properties (polar-charged, polar-noncharged, nonpolar). For enzymes we looked studied hemoglobin in depth. There is no way to memorize all of the enzymes lol, but you can apply some of the properties of hemoglobin to all of them. We also had a brief intro to metabolism, but that is where biochem II picked up. Honestly, I would just pick up a biochem book (like Voet,Voet and Pratt from amazon, second edition for like $10 on amazon when I got it) and learn it yourself. It isn't that bad, and I don't think it would be worth the money to take it during the summer. Also, if your school doesn't require biochem as a prereq you shouldn't be worrying too much about it.

Well, hope that helps,

Adam

I have a BS in Biochemistry and I agree. It's pretty easy to learn/study it by yourself (I spent maaany long nights in the library cramming alone in the basement). Voet&Voet is good, but my favorite book was Lehninger - Principles of Biochemistry. It explains things very well and sometimes I felt Voet&Voet got a little confusing with their phrasing. Though, my Nucleic Acid/Protein Synthesis professor preferred the Voet&Voet. Actually, my favorite course in college was Biochemistry of Metabolism. I still have glycolysis, the krebs cycle, and gluconeogenesis all memorized with the enzymes/metabolites! Can't wait for the biochem course in Pharm. school!

I second Lehniger, I used that book afterwards to supplement studies in every class because it is so well written and clear to read. Lisochka, see if you can get a syllabus from someone, who took biochem before, so you can see what the expectations are for the course. In my school, professors often record lectures, perhaps you can find someone who has recordings or mp3s of lectures for the course and lecture slides to go along with them ?

I took biochem a few years, so I can't help you there.
