I know about three people have already asked this question but every situation is different and I would GREATLY appreciate some feedback regarding mine.

I'm a second year master's student in Marriage & Family therapy. I'll have 500+ hours of clinical experience. 150 hours I'll will acquire at an internship in a psychiatric intensive care unit. I have been employed full time throughout my graduate school experience at a drug abuse treatment center and have tons of other volunteer/atheletic experience.

My undergraduate GPA is 3.46. I have taken General Chem I & II a year ago during the summer and got C's in each. I was employed full time during this summer and my wife was pregnant so I have some legitimate reasons for my sub-par performance.

I am currently considering taking General Biology, Physics, and OChem in one year - this would be about a 15 hour semester - but I won't be working, just shadowing and volunteering some in a hospital. I'll start this class schedule next fall - 2010, take the MCAT spring 2011 and possibly matriculate in 2012.

First question - Should I retake General Chemistry?
Second question - Is General Biology, Physics, and OChem do-able all in one year assuming I have plenty of time to dedicate to studying?

Any other information/opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I would retake Chem I and II. C's in two of your prereqs doesnt look at all good. 15 credits/semester is no problem, especially if you're not working. If you cant handle that then how can you expect to make it through your MSI. Just make sure your classes are your priority and you do well in them.

1. It's up to you to decide how competitive you want to be. You're a Masters student with a decent undergrad GPA. If you want to minimize your time back in school, you can plow on into O-Chem. Just be sure to get the A to show a positive upward trend with regard to chemistry.

2. It's very doable.

Extremely doable....I am doing the same thing in a year w/ Gen chem tacked on there!

I might re-take the 2 gen-chems again as C in those beginning level courses arent thaaaaat great. You do have a good gpa though, and definitely get As in the classes next year. Upward trend FTW!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. This site is keping me motivated - eye on the prize, right?

Anyway, I know those C's are detrimental to my overall performance but if I can do well in Bio/Physics/OChem then I think, whith my Masters it shows abiliby, motivation, dedication and aptitude.

So, I think I'll refrain from retaking those classes initially and retake them if the ADCOM's don't accept me the first year I apply.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Good luck with your studies, I agree that course load is definitely doable. I'm taking Phys I, Biochem, Genetics, and Neurobio this semester, so I can't really comment on the doable part just yet. I'll get back with you in Dec. 😀

I started taking classes this past spring.

I took 9 hours in the spring semester (gen. chem II and biology I w/ labs), 18 hours in the summer (physics I and II w/ labs; O-chem I and II w/ labs). I'm currently enrolled in 12 hours this fall (biology II, biochem, and physical chemistry w/ labs).

I have managed to work full time while taking this load, and I also prepared for the MCAT and took it in June.

Only you know what you are capable of accomplishing. You definitely can't stand another C in a prerequisite course and you really need to aim for all A's from here on out.

I am taking Bio 1, Phys 1 and Chem 1. (All with labs of course) But I find I have had a fair amount of time. I am actually regretting not taking at least one more class. I was worried that 3 hard sciences would be a lot to handle... but I am used to working full time. I am not working even part time now. SO ... Since you are just shadowing and you will have lots of time for school, I think you can do well. I would retake the general chemistry even if it takes you an extra year. It will refresh you for taking O-chem (which is a monster I hear) and you know you can get A's in them this time. Plus it will refresh you for the MCATS. Besides if you rush and skip taking them you may end up not getting in due to the C's and then you still have to wait a year.

Yes, u should retake ur gen chem classes.

It really depends what kinda physics u will take but i am assuming its going to be algebra based. So that class shouldn't be hard. O-chem takes time, bit hard, but lots of fun. Dont really like bio but its not a hard class ether. So u should be fine taking all these classes. I would say go for it, take ur chances.

By the way i am taking two physics and bio this fall and i am kind of scared, just dont wanna have any bad grades! Lol

I hope you get a good prof for physics. I had an awful one, so college physics (non-Calc based) was the one class that gave me the same feeling every time as when someone scratches their nails on a chalkboard.

Why are you taking one and two?
