Can someone please describe me the basic pathway in the thyroid? I had written it down somewhere in my notes, but I can't find it for the life of me. For example the relationship between t3, t4 in hyper and hypothyroidism. Thanks in advance!!

T3 and T4 are both hormones produced by the Thyroid gland. They are regulated by the TSH, produced by the anterior pituitary gland. T 4 is the Thyroxine hormone, which is present in higher concentration in the blood than T3 hormone, called triiodothyronine. T4 is converted to the active form, called T3 in target tissues.

Hypothyroidism is a disorder where thyroid does not produce enough Thyroid hormone. Symptoms are usually fatigue, depression, weight gain. It is treated by given patients T3 and/or T4.

Hyperthyroidism is a disorder where individual's thyroid produces larger than normal amounts of Thyroid hormone. Symptoms include rapid heart rate, irritability, muscle weakness, and irritability.
Treatments include radioiodine therapy, medications or surgery, depending on the severity of the disease.

Hope this helps.

Just to add on to what @orgoman22 said, a common disease that causes hyperthyroidism is Graves Disease–an autoimmune disorder where antibodies agonistically bind to TSH receptors on the thyroid and stimulate T3/T4 production.

A common disease that causes hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's Disease–another autoimmune disorder where the immune system kills thyroid tissue, thus inhibiting T3/T4 production.
