How important is it to take biochemistry Lab before the mcat?

looking at the bstopics.pdf available from AAMC, i didn't see anything at all that i specifically learned in my biochemistry lab for biochem majors. however, the first in-class exam in EK bio was a joke for me. it was about biochem and lab techniques. also, i learned some mol. bio techniques in my biochem lab which i think might also be useful. all in all, i think it would be helpful, but biochem lab is also a lot of work (8 hours a week x.X). if you think it'll affect your time to study, don't take it. you can learn about the lab techniques from a book or online.

I don't know, but I only wish that someone would pay for me to take such a thing. When my parents were paying for my education, I bought the standard Biochem text offered at Boston University and read it from cover to cover. I also purchased texts on proteomics and other topics--simply out of curiousity. In my non-expert opinion--it MAY help you.

I think the real issue is that, if you're smart enough, and intellectually curious enough, then you probably have little to worry about anyway.

In my studies, I am taking the MCAT in April. I have subjected myself to all of the MCAT material. By April, I will have thoroughly exposed myself to 99%+ of the MCAT material. That leaves the critical thinking aspect. Only experience can expose one to those things. I am still trying!

This course is required for my degree, so I would eventually have to take it. I've heard from the students who took the course in the past that they spent close to 10 hours each week. So, it's best to take such course when the rest of schedule is not very heavy.

I took biochem lab after my MCAT, because it's a killer class. I didn't need anything from that class either of the times I took the MCAT that I didn't get from the lecture course. A good review course will cover all you need from that class.
