Berkeley premed here. It's pretty common to take Chem1A+L (general chem) then Chem 3A+L, Chem 3B+L (organic chems) and then MCB102 (biochem). The Berkeley premed website says that most kids will then classify Chem1A and 3A as general and then 3B and Biochem as the Organic chem.

I'm just curious how shady this looks and whether med schools are ok with it. I understand that a lot of kids from Berkeley do get into med school and I was just wondering if there are any schools that don't like to see this.

90% of them aren't.

PS: I wouldn't call 55% "many."

Well, that's interesting. I am aware of a couple of ivies where Biochem is counted as a second Gen Chem, but definitely not as Orgo.

Hmm so 90% of schools don't approve and yet 55% still get in? Doesn't make sense to me.

Really? At most of the schools I've seen where a substitution is allowed, they'll accept Biochem as a substitute for Orgo II. I wouldn't think any schools would accept Biochem as Gen Chem II. The material isn't even close to being similar.

Not every pre-med at Berkeley is dumb enough to fully trust Berkeley's pre-med office.
