Is biochem hard? Or is it just a lot of information? I took a plant physiology class this summer where I had to learn lots of reaction pathways in detail (which I really enjoyed), and I'm wondering if I should expect something similar for biochem. Enlighten me. 🙂

UCLAStudent. Did you take OBEE 162? Because if you did, Biochem will be harder than that. A lot of memorization of pathways and some minor details. It's a hard class but you learn a lot in it.

Yep, OBEE 162. Darn, I was hoping that they would be similar in difficulty. 😉 Thanks.

i'm taking biochem this fall. i've talked to several students who have taken it here (both ugrad and grad level), and the consensus is that the difficulty of biochem is quite overstated. i remember walking onto campus as a sophomore and hearing "ochem will bury you. it weeds everybody out!", but then, it wasn't really that hard at all.

i'm kind of looking foward to it. if nothing else, its good prep for med school, and my GPA is pretty much set now, so grades can kiss my ass!

Well, I guess it would depend on who you took 162 with. My professor (Talbott) only wanted us to know the steps. In Biochem, youll have to know what happens in detail with each step of the 2 major metabolic pathways...and more.

The Ochem is a big overstatement. I actually ended up liking ochem. The thing with Biochem, at least with UCLA is that it's difficult because it requires a lot of time...but it's definitely doable.

Yeah, I had Talbott, and he only wanted us to know the steps. I am a major dork and memorized everything (structures of G3P, 3PGA, etc.), but only because it helped me to remember the steps better and helped me to differentiate between them.

Thanks for the advice. I think it will be doable with my schedule (biochem, an MCDB class, UCLA Chorale, and an upper-div. English class). 👍

Oh, and I am not taking Bates. I want to take her, but she doesn't fit in my schedule.

Ah you'll do fine without Bates. I didn't take her either.
