How important is it to take biochemistry? for allopathic? for osteopathic? Could you take it during the summer after you graduate from college if it was required for the medical school? Or would it be ok to apply in june 09 even if schools require it and take biochem at post-bacc b4 starting med school in 2010?

Take it if it interests you. Don't take it if it doesn't.

Most programs do not require biochemistry prior to matriculation. I don't know which schools do require biochem, but the 2009-2010 MSAR should give you a good idea. AAMC sells the MSAR, but Amazon.com was selling it for a bit cheaper last time I looked. Typically, prereqs have to be completed prior to matriculation, so taking it after graduation should be okay. If you have questions regarding a particular program, you can always email the admissions office directly.

Biochem is an important part of the curriculum in both osteopathic and allopathic med schools. Taking it before matriculation would probably make your life a lot easier during the first year of med school, but if you don't you'll learn it during your M1 year anyway.

If you happen to be accepted by a rare school that requires it, you'd be fine if you finish the course before the first day you start med school, so a summer course would be fine.

I'd say it is a good idea to take it if you can fit it into your schedule.

yes, you can take it the summer after you graduate.

Yeah, I'd agree with the others. Be safe, take biochem.

So far, it hasn't been too challenging and some parts are actually interesting... Go ahead and take it.

I would totally recommend taking Biochemistry. If it's a requirement, surely take it. But if you have space in your schedule to study biochem as an undergrad, definetely take it.

You will most probably forget a lot of it before entering medschool, but at least you've gone over it before. I never had biochem before, and it hit me hard in medschool. Others who took biochem in undergrad had more time for studying other things...
