Hey All,

Well, I guess this is my first post on here, so to introduce myself...

- Junior in college double majoring in Molecular Bio and Medicine, Health, and Society (if this means anything, double minoring in chemistry and religious studies)

- Currently 3.984 cumulative GPA, 4.0 on directly premed courses (physics, organic, gen chem, bio, calc, english, biochem), though I got an A- for four credit hours in cell bio and intro to research (guess that's a question unrelated to this thread, but does science GPA = all science, or just specifically premed?)

- Taking the MCAT in January (studying is consuming my Christmas break 😀)

... and that should be it in terms of relevant intro (irrelevant: I like cats).

My question here is with regarding research in bioethics. This has been a field that has been of special interest to me since high school, and I've tried to incorporate it as much as possible into my undergraduate education. However, before pursuing this form of research, I tried my hand at bio research... and discovered that I abhor it 😛 So now, my two questions are...

1. How might I break into this form of research late in my undergraduate career and
2. What internships are out there for the summer, which might involve bioethics?

Thanks for any and all help!

This is a little premature - but there is an option at CCLCM to get a (free) masters in bioethics while in medical school (it's a 5 year medical school). There is a clinical bioethics team that is available on-call for clinicians at Cleveland Clinic and many of this department are involved in CCLCM. Unfortunately, we do require you get exposure in some of that other research that you don't like during your time here. 😛

I had known Case had a masters in bioethics, but I didn't know about the Cleveland Clinic's med school! However, I'm still not sure if I could put myself through the research for five years, as I know it's not who I am (an odd question, as one graduates with a "special qualification in biomedical research," but are there options to have the science research for CCLCM be a side focus?). In terms of science research experience, I researched for a semester in a cell biology university lab, and then interned for a summer in a biochem lab in Germany through the DAAD RISE program.

Well, if you do not think you can put yourself through it, then I would suggest that it isn't for you. Research is truly integrated into our entire curriculum, so if you are not a fan - you would likely not enjoy the experience. There is a mandatory first summer basic science research experience and a second summer clinical research experience (both at 10 weeks). Beyond that - your choice of research topics is entirely your choosing. You must spend a year doing a research project culminating in a thesis defense (you can also attain a masters degree during this time, if you take particular courses and carefully choose your research - again free-of-charge). However, our Dean Young strongly encourages students to pursue research into areas such as the business of medicine and healthcare delivery.
