On the subject of biological diversity (Domains, Kingdoms, etc) the ADA's list of topics tested is kind of confusing me:

Diversity of Life: Biological Organization
and Relationship of Major Taxa (Five-
Kingdom System) (3)
A. Monera
B. Plantae
C. Animalia
D. Protista
E. Fungi
F. Etc

I mean what exactly does that "etc." mean? And there's only mentions of the 5 kingdoms from Domain Eukarya, what about Archaea and Bacteria? Anyone know if we'll be tested on those as well?

There's A LOT of info on diversity, and I'm wondering how much of it I should know.

I think if you know everything in the AP Bio cliff's notes on biological diversity then you should be in top shape. The Destroyer and Topscore questions on diversity could also be helpful but I still think it is a bit ridiculous to learn all the organisms in such detail. I don't think knowing what a Flame Cell is will earn you any extra points on the bio.

Thanks for replying.

Know everything in Cliffs? Really? Because it seems to go into a lot of detail. I wanted to know if there was any topic in there I could skip, or should I just know everything?

I agree with the wirednerv.

Also, bio can end up being really time consuming while studying, so make sure you balance your time in other sections. You will propably get 5 questions on the bio section that are super specific and very random. I don't know if there is one good way to prepare other than trying to do as much as you can.

I know what you mean. However, Cliff's isn't really that bad. It helped me to read several other sources: Schaums, Destroyer, Bio text.

Once you see that same information over and over again in different forms, the stuff in cliff's will begin to look much, much more familiar and therefore easier to memorize.

You will be able to pretty much recite the page of Animal diversity from Cliff's off the top of your head.

The protists are a bit more of a pain, IMO.

yea cliff's is a good source to memorize all the info on diversity...it has good tables. I memorized the whole chapter but dont just memorize be able to put it all together by comparing one phylum to another. I guess memorizing didnt really help me much coz you kind of had to apply the concepts on those too. I know it sounds crazy but thats how it was!

Ok, thanks guys. I was really overwhelmed when I opened that chapter in Cliffs and totally psyched myself out, thinking there's no way I could memorize all this. I guess you just gotta do what you gotta do.

I just wish the ADA would list specifics instead of just saying "know classification." It makes studying harder than it should be IMO.

I think by putting "etc.." saves their butt...that means they can really pull any question out of the blue and tell you "sorry buddy, I told you to study the etc stuff" 🙂
