Hello SDN,

I need some advice. I took general biology a long time ago but at my undergrad the labs were separate and I never got around to taking them. I'm thinking of just taking two biology courses at a community college that include a lab component. I tried at a nearby 4 year but there is absolutely no room. I need to get these completed soon since I already applied this cycle and have a bunch of interviews. Will it matter if I just take an ecology class for example? I literally just need those 2 lab units and I'm not sure what other options I have.

Then you need to enroll in those 2 labs. You don't have to enroll in the corresponding lectures and an ecology class will certainly not do it. See if you can take both Bio 1 and Bio 2 labs simultaneously, you would need to explain your situation to somebody at the school so that they can grant you such a permission with unlinked labs. Take it at CC if you have to.

So even if the ecology class includes a lab component that won't suffice? It was my understanding that any biology lab would do?

I have permission to take both labs at a state school but the problem is that they have no room for me. I was hoping I could just enroll in other bio classes that include a lab component so I get the required year

I don't think you can substitute required courses. They tell students with AP credit to take additional upper-division coursework. You only need to complete pre-requisites prior to matriculation, so you can take those labs in the spring semester if you can't in the fall.

It's my understanding that almost all schools require 1 year of Bio and labs. I already have more than a year but just never took the lab courses. If someone were to take all upper division bio courses why would they have to specifically take gen bio labs? I have AP credit not that I'm using it so why can't I just use any biology class with a lab? I don't think any school I applied to specifically stated 1 year of general bio
and general bio labs. I could be wrong here but I know people who used anatomy to count as part of their lab requirement.

A&P labs counted for me as part of requirement for DO, but never get a chance to look at my AMCAS application. Therefore, I don't know if they counted the A&P labs as bio lab requirement
