I am now in the depths of MCAT studying along with 15 credits of sciences and a college sport (thankfully in the offseason). What do you do to have fun? Literally nothing that used to be fun is anymore. My pre premed freshman days involved hanging with the "bros", not so nonalcoholic beer and video games. Now they're getting C's and D's and I'm all alone at the top busting my butt trying to get into med school.

On the rare occasion I have free time, I want to find something that's fun. Console games aren't fun, sold my higher end laptop so I wouldn't be tempted with that sector, I already workout two hours a day whether I like it or not, and yeah I have about 1 hour a day or less of me time. Wth do I do? I have a SO already, but I want a fun non academic hobby......help before I go insane.

Tldr: One hour a day of me time to prevent insanity, what non academic hobby do I pick up.
Edit: it's regularly negative degrees outside until March.

Temple Run 2, Scramble with Friends 👍👍

Period week 🙁

That's unfortunate. Hopefully, the frequency won't be low (like radio waves and television) 😉

In all seriousness, just relax and have fun. Hang out with your friends. Throw paper airplanes. Read books. Play games etc.

Doesn't matter!!!

That sounds totally UNFUN during period week.

OP, I really like to work on my graphic novel that I write and draw myself. 🙂 Or for shorter breaks, pick up a book on a random topic like the history of India. This gives you a break from medicine.

I sing to let out stress. It's a great outlet.

MCAT studying time sucked, I was doing it while working full-time and boy was that no fun. Like others suggested, read a book - it does not have to be hard core or classic lit just something easy that allows your mind to rest. Something else that I'd recommend in general is to try to meditate. It really helps to keep me sane during those weeks with little personal time. A good book to start is: http://www.amazon.com/Mindfulness-Plain-English-20th-Anniversary/dp/0861719069 . I usually try to meditate for 30 min. every morning 🙂 Good luck!

Go swimming

So I'm just gonna ignore those past few comments.....

Anywho...every time I took a test as an ms1, I would drive straight from the med school to the shooting range. There's nothing like sending a few rounds down range or dusting clays to get your mind off of school. Throughout my first two years, I always felt like med school was in the back of my mind. I felt like if I wasn't studying I was doing something wrong. The shooting range really was the only place where I could go and forget that I was a med student for an hour.

I hit the local bike trails, exercise plus nature = good break, much better than a gym in nice weather. reading fun/light stuff, I took a blacksmithing class awhile back which sounds weird, but it was fun and a great stress reliever, swimming.

If you like animals consider volunteering at a shelter or walking dogs. Nothing like playful pups to distract you for awhile.

If you aren't into video games then I doubt you'll be into watching TV shows or movies, but there is always Netflix (usually can get a free 1st month trial). Or you could read a book. Staying indoors limits a lot of things, but if you're tired of hanging out with the "bros" you could try and make friends with some of the more intelligent classmates from your pre-req courses. I'm sure they can find interesting things to do.

If that doesn't work you can try learning how to cook, since you would be spending money on food anyways, so no extra costs incurred there.

You could try something creative, if that's up your alley. It's always nice to have something to work on, be it a song, a novel, a cartoon, or whatever.

reddit.

if that doesn't work, hookers and coke are always the answer.

edit: or watch the #1 TV show of all time: 24. Just sayin'

I'm big on TV shows, get hooked on to even just one show and it'll eat away a lot of your free time haha.

Go hiking for the day and breathe the fresh air. That or a nice bike ride. Or play charades with friends.

There's two kinds of fun...

Normal Fun: Doing activities that you would normally do in order to enjoy yourself.

SDN Fun: You need to ask yourself, "What would the ADCOMs consider fun?"

I'm just trying to keep my sanity, not improve my app.

go paintball
No indoor here plus outside would be like shooting rocks at each other.

Shooting range idea is actually great, I've always wanted to do some longer range shooting with my deer rifle.

Why does it have to be a hobby or a computerized game to be relaxing for you?

You're already working your butt off, in a relationship and getting exercise. Why don't you just chill? If you don't know how to chill, definitely look into meditation or yoga. Getting the sense from your posts in this thread that the only thing you are lacking is knowing how to relax. If you insist on having a relaxing "hobby," take up something repetitive like knitting.

I personally find the process of cooking relaxing, from deciding what to make, getting the groceries, preparing the ingredients and following the recipe. At the end I have something good to eat and I saved money vs eating out. You want to find something that won't frustrate you but will occupy your hands and crowd out your mind.

that's when ladies are the friskiest

if you're afraid of blood choose a new career

I've always found a difference between blood on the upper half of my body and my d.

If my boyfriend was afraid of my vagina during my period I would be really sad.

During my summer off I'm going to get a gun permit, learn to shoot, travel, and do a bunch of watersports! Though only the first two can help you now...

However, since it's winter and you're in a 'tundra,' why not bring the girlfriend skating? Reading is also good. Maybe join an intramural sports team?

I'm trying to pick up violin. I work on it a minimum of 15 minutes per day, more like 30 if I am either feeling it or am procrastinating on something else.

Also I let myself go to one party per week. Actually, I assign myself to go to one party per week whether I am feeling social or not. I'm bad with crowds and I am trying to work on my talking-to-strangers skills.
