i'm about to start 2nd year and was thinking of getting some board review books beforehand. i've heard that it makes studying for the boards a whole hell of a lot easier when it comes time. any suggestions on what to get and/or a good (read: cheap) place to get them? so far i'm planning on getting BRS path and physio as well as FA.

thanks!

Hey, I am starting 2nd year soon too...Get FA asap. It has a comprehensive list of review books/resources at the end. I would get FA before buying any review books.

Here is what I've got so far...(plz keep in mind that I will be reviewing as much as possible during 2nd year)...I got these for really cheap off some third years....
HY Biochem and Lippincott biochem
HY Immunology
HY Behavioral science
HY Anatomy and BRS Gross Anatomy (my weakest subject)
HY Neuroanatomy
Baby Robbins--I plan to have this book memorized by the end of 2nd year.

I am getting:
BRS Physiology (the longer version) and BRS Phys. Cases and problems
BRS pathology
HY Embryology
Lippincott Pharmacology or Katzung's
Robbins question book
Edited to add--I am also getting Microbio made ridiculously simple

What are you getting? I would love to exchange ideas with you or anyone else who's getting ready for MSII. 😀

Reading and annotating FA during your courses is a must. GET FA!!! BRS Path would also be high on my list of books to get for 2nd year as well as Micro Made Simple. Those three should be enough for the year. Concentrate on getting others as you start actual exam review.

HY Biochem and Lippincott biochem
Lippincott may be too much.

HY Immunology
Definitely need something better than this - too short!

HY Anatomy and BRS Gross Anatomy (my weakest subject)
BRS is overkill. Stick to HY Anatomy and your favorite atlas.

Baby Robbins--I plan to have this book memorized by the end of 2nd year.
Good for courses, overkill for boards. Get something with micrographs.

BRS Physiology (the longer version) and BRS Phys. Cases and problems
Would recommend some better material for acid-base at least.

BRS pathology
Alternatively, Goljan's new pathology review.

Lippincott Pharmacology or Katzung's
Use Step Up's Drug List to cram. Use pharm cards, but throw out anything not in First Aid.

Edited to add--I am also getting Microbio made ridiculously simple
Definitely need to add an Immunology resource (not HY Immuno). Use Step Up's Bug List to cram.

Cheers!

Thanks sooo much for your input guys...What are some good resources for immunology? I really don't want to leave anything to chance when it comes to step I....😀

The Lange book is good as a base and the Apendix of Pathophysiology for the Boards & Wards is a good summary that explains immunologic diseases. Also the first few chapters of BRS Path.

For those who need an immuno source, I highly recommend lange's medical micro and immuno review book (I don't remember the exact title and I'm too lazy to get the book, but I can look it up if someone requests). The immuno section is a little less than one hundred pages and it is excellent. The only complaint I would have is that it is so concise that it is hard to read- especially when you read it for the first time. However, it has everything that you need. I used this book for my first year path class (we did immuno during that time) and I used it in conjunction with my class notes. I did very well in immuno using only those two sources.
