Bodybuilding and Fitness in Medical School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Didn't even know a thread like this existed.

I'm 190 pounds and stuck at 10% body fat. I dropped from 14% to 10% doing intermittent fasting but have been stuck here. I trust my fellow future doctors more than random online gurus and was wondering if any of you had been in a similar situation. I want to get down to about 7%.

Any of you cheeky clark kents from the misc?

Hey man, it's me, TeamPunishment! Just make a thread on the misc asking for reps and I'll hit you up brah.

Anyways, I'm not even in med school yet lol...have any of you guys competed, or does med school and such take up too much of your time?

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) states that the essential body fat percentage for women is 10-13%, so if the sex you stated on your MDapp is accurate, I would go eat a few bigmacs right away instead of trying to lose more weight. o.o

Stop doing IF and stick to a regular meal plan. Focus on a 40/40/20 diet and just increase your volume and cardio.

Im doing Layne Norton's PHAT. I suggest you give it a look. Im probably around 15-18% and bulking right now and I wont start cutting till I am 22-24%.

The more muscle you have, the more ripped you will look and consequently the lower BF percentage.

What kind of a giant woman would be 190 pounds with 10% body fat? Probably an olympic weightlifter

Sorry, I use my friend's account.

My favorite quote in regards to this topic is - "to look 10 pounds stronger, lose 10 pounds of fat." A regular meal plan and/or a 40/40/20 diet can't get you to drop below 10% in my opinion.

Sure I could do intense cardio and go down to 7% that way, but I'd most likely burn a ton of muscle while doing it.

Start carb cycling. Read lyle McDonald's ultimate diet 2.0

It's all about Carb Backloading. Similar to intermittent fasting, but better.

starting week 2 of smolov intense phase. Finishing the base phase I felt like I was dead.

Imma do a little mock powerlifting meet before I go to med school. Hoping for a 1200+ total at 200lb.

Thinking 435/265/515 are my goals.

Lmao TeamPunishment negged me into the red once. Not a fan of him

Maybe you should get some of your shots before worrying about all this lol.

Try keto. It'll help dry you out too.

you know there is a section of misc for medical students?

aware, but we gotta spread out nomsayin.

So who else is gonna have a hard time in med school not being able to use misc lingo like "this" and "cheeky ****" or "getting yucky with the boys". Think imma just say it and see what my classmates think haha.

that feel when cutting when you feel you're getting smaller.

In on this.

Currently unable to lift because last week when I was trying to cut some frozen meat to defrost (gotta hit dem macros), the meat slipped under my knife and I ended up impaling a chef's knife half an inch into my hand. Probably shouldn't get back into the gym until the stitches come out, but I'll probably end up going tomorrow so I don't go crazy.

Also, that feel when MCAT is in less than 4 weeks and still not done with content review. Consequences will never be the same.

There's a miscer at my school but we haven't identified each other in person. I might just wear a "Do you even lift?" shirt to the gym as a flag and see if he reveals himself lol.

I basically studied for my MCAT in about 6 weeks, it's doable. I just said eff trying to completely know all the content backwards and forwards, that will help if you're shooting for like a 37+. I just memorized all the essential content and then practiced my timings and stuff, came out with a pretty legit score. Study smart, not hard. If you're gunning for like a 37 then yeah, not knowing all of the content by now is kind of bad.

whats going on in here guyz??

I'm trying to get into squatting (im a girl) but I honestly have no idea how todo it with weights. I used to do 200 squats daily but when you guys are saying "squat 225" you mean squat 225 pounds correct? Do you need a spotter or can you do it alone? I only stopped squatting bc one of my knees was getting very painful, squatting with weights though I wouldn't have to do as many sets correct? Only like 10-30 squats total right? I really know nothing about lifting so any advice would be appreciated!

you dont need a spotter. I rarely even use a back/dip belt until i get to 315.
practice the motion with just your body and then the barbell.

If you cant balance yourself, switch to dumbells and squat while letting the dumbells hang at your sides.

How many reps and sets should I do? What weight do I start with. I'm 5"4 and 120 lbs and probably average strength

I can't squat 225lbs. I can do 225 squats without weights, as in just moving up and down lol

See if you can do the bar (45lb) and gauge from there.

Just practice good form and focus on moving ur hips back before you bend at the knee. Besides that I don't want to complicate things.

Early on you can have more volume but I think 5-10 reps for 3 sets or until your form breaks down is a good start.

You can check out the "So you think you can squat?" Video series from eliteFTS.

A few cues are to think of squats as a butt exercise and not a leg exercise( stick your butt out and arch your back up hard. Every muscle should be tight),sit back like you are sitting in a chair, explode up leading with your chest up. Also, make sure you are NOT letting your knees fold in when going up. Pretend there is a rubber band on your legs trying to pull your knees together and pull them apart.

Another method is to stand face against the wall, arms up like you're holding the barbell and squat. Try to keep your chest against the wall. You will notice you can't start with your knees because they will hit the wall.

225 would be a very accomplished feat for a girl your size haha

I know you said you did a bunch of squats, but that your knees hurt means you still might have been doing it wrong. Start with "box squats" to help with your form, and help you focus on your hips. do this by sitting on a bench or a box that is at a height so that your thighs are parallel to the ground when you are sitting. Then, put your feet shoulder length apart or a tiny bit wider, angle your toes out about 30 degrees, put your arms out so that they are also parallel to the ground (you'll look silly, but just do it), and stand up, making sure to stick your butt out as you stand up, keep your chest up, and your head neutral, and making sure your knees never go forward further than your toes. Also make sure your knees to not flare inward toward your hips or too far outward away from your hips either - keep them neutral. (rubber band trick the guy mentioned above is very good, if you get what he means)

If you're strong enough (i will assume you will be), hold a dumbbell to your chest like your giving it a hug, and repeat, making sure to keep the form.

Once you are confident in the form of the "box squat", you can graduate to regular squats hugging a dumbbell. Make sure you keep the same form, and drop down until your thighs break parallel (that means slightly lower than parallel) with the ground. Don't bounce, and make sure you control your motion at all time. Remember, ass out....this is very important. If you're self-conscious, try not to be lol

Once you are confident in this exercise, graduate to the bar. Same thing. You say you've done squats before without weight, so you might be able to graduate to the bar very quickly. As far as bar placement, place the bar on top of your traps (not on your neck). Shrugs help strengthen these muscles to help with the discomfort. Either that or work on the "low bar squat" (use youtube). I'm not too big a supporter of the low bar, and for practical purpose a high bar squat should work fine.

Also, youtube can be your friend, but it can also be your enemy. Use it carefully!

good luck!

Thanks guys! I'll look up a few more videos to perfect my form and then I'll give it another go at the gym 🙂

Do you even lift, gurl? JK Don't worry about squatting that much for a female. The highest I have seen girls squat (that were not female bodybuilders) was like 135. Try the bar or use machines that are made for squatting. A big plus on squats is it will make your bum bigger, a real booty lol not a saggy one like some chick think they have it going on.

I wanted to get mine off da TV, but you have to be 18 or older. I'm either waiting 6 years or getting mommy to order me a pretty red headdress!

What is the best way for a woman to get this lean? I'm relatively athletic and like to be active but I don't have a lot of success with diets.

By losing weight. That's all. You could not work out and gain this simply by losing weight. However you want to strength train so you look a little meaty/curvy whatever you want to call it. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie.

Hahahaha I'm surprised the teacher didnt write you up for saying "Fawkin"

If you are ever stressed out or nervous...try to relieve that stress... If you know what I mean

Source = scrubs. And it works.

I use the Six Star brand just because it's the cheapest one I can find at Walmart in terms of protein/dollar.

Stop using that garbage. It is cheap for a reason. Nothing, but cheap protein and fillers.
