  1. Medical Student
I am a first year medical student in the process of applying for the Army HPSP. The January board just took place, so I should be hearing back any day now. My name was submitted for the Scroll in December (according to my recruiter, although I assumed this would only take place after my oath), and I have been told it will take a minimum of 60 days.

When is the latest date that I can register for this summer's BOLC? At the current pace, will I be in the system and eligible to receive an order to attend in time? Seems like the earliest I can swear in would be early March, and I'm sure there's more to be done in the process after that.

My understanding is that I have to attend it before graduation, and I don't see how I will be able to go away for 6 weeks in the summer once second year starts. Your insight would be appreciated.

Once you have been offered and accepted the scholarship, your recruiter SHOULD help you to pre-enroll at the Army's medical education website. Part of the pre-enrollment process is asking if you want to attend the BOLC prior to the scholarship start date. Stay on top of your recruiter! Your "packet" needs to be processed through his entire chain of command and forwarded to the HPSP office in order for you to go this summer.

You have a fair understanding of what needs to be done. For those with a four year scholarship, if you do not attend BOLC, you will only be allowed one interview ADT rather than two. Those who do not attend the BOLC while in medical school (including USUHS) will attend the summer AMEDD BOLC the year of graduation prior to internship. This means that you will start internship in Aug or Sep rather than June.

Now for the rest of the story. Starting the summer of 2016 there is supposed to be a MANDATORY additional four weeks of training called the Direct Commission Course. Eventually, you will not be allowed to attend BOLC without having attended the DCC. There is also a rumor that special pays will not be allowed without having attended the BOLC. The Dental Corps has already started this and it looks like it's heading toward the Medical Corps in the next few years.

Thank you for your response. I just found out today that I have been accepted to the HPSP. I will however have to wait about a month before I can be commissioned. I asked my recruiter if there is anything I can do at this point to pre-enroll for BOLC and her answer was no. Is that true?

I am under the impression I can't officially accept the scholarship until the scroll process is over. Please let me know if this is the case.

Ahhh, recruiters. Gotta love em.

Please be aware that there two forces at work here. One is getting you into the Army (scroll and oath of office). The second is the scholarship (paying tuition, stipend, books and equipment). While it seems that pre-enrolling might be putting the cart before the horse, in reality, you are pre-filling in the information needed to pay the bills and request ADTs because the scroll and oath are pretty much automatic.

Please go to www.moids.army.mil/medicaleducation and click the button "Request LOGON ID". Fill out the requried info. Once hte HPSP Office is notified that you have been selected, they wil. email your ID. Make sure that you use an email address that will accept email from just about any source (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.) instead of your current school email which can have a blocker on it.

You will then need to create a password, and after that is done you will be ready to pre-enroll. After you have pre-enrolled, you will receive an email every Monday AM stating that the HPSP office is waiting for your packet from your recruiter. Use this as a reminder to have the recruiter not only send your packet up the chain, but to also check to ensure that as its been QC'ed that no errores have been noted that he recruiter needs to fix.

Any questions about the process can be directed to 1-877-MED-ARMY.
