Radiologists are a strange breed. Because private practice income is so high, many good radiologists at one time or another enter private practice. The ones who stay in academia are dedicated to research, writing and teaching. They forgo the wealth to some degree. They write seminal texts and hold key positions in the major societies (ARRS, RSNA, ACR, ABR etc), and in the societies for their subspecialties. You can find their names as editors of the major publications (Radiology, AJR, Investigative Radiology etc).
To name a few: Osborn, Resnick, Thrall, Federle, Naidich, Bradley, Stark, Armstrong, Castillo, Kim, Eideken, Teveras, Harris, Nyberg, Helms ... They are selected to be fellows of the ACR and honored with gold medal awards for their years of service.
