OK, I know there have been posts about this in the past but just wanted to get some feedback.

I finished a post-bac in boston this past spring and took the august mcat. Have been doing part-time stuff over the summer and till now. I just can't for the life of me seem to find a research related job out there. I have had a few research assitant interviews but both were really looking for a two year commitment. I have scoured the job boards and sent my resume everywhere. I am now looking into substitute teaching and non-medicallly related stuff. Just looking for something interesting to do this year. Any programs or internships anyone is aware of? Thanks everyone

Sorry that I can't help you with your question (I'm in Minneapolis) but do you mind telling me which postbac program you just completed and your thoughts on the experience?

I did the program at Umass-Boston. It went really well for me, actually much better than I had anticipated. The proffesors there are very accessable and the advising throughout the whole process is great. It is an inexpensive program and I really learned the material well. I did really well in all the classes and I am applying right now so I guess the jury is still out on if the program can get you in. We will see.

Hey Bardo,

I will be in the same position you are in when I finish with Harvard Extension School at the end of Summer 06. For the glide year though, I am thinking of continually going to school full-time in the case that I don't get into any medschool. If I am able to get a 1 year masters like a mph during the glide year, I think that would help me more for the next med school application than if I worked in a medically related job during the glide year. Post-baccs usually have to improve their academic record more than adding to their job experience. You must be pretty confident of your chances though...

Bardo, I am in the same situation. I finished BCPO this past May, at the Harvard Extension School, and took the MCAT this August. Based on my numbers, I am most likely going to matriculate into med school in 2006. While this is good news, it has made finding a "glide year" job very difficult. I too have been scouring the Boston job boards, and have been offered lab tech positions I can't take due to the two year commitment.

Feeling frustrated, I've decided to consider other options. The dream temp-lab positions open up too few and far between. I have registered with a temp service, and turn down jobs that aren't related to healthcare or research. While it's mostly administrative work, I figure at the very least I'll have the opportunity to network with people in the healthcare field and make some dough before school starts.

Also, I've become a volunteer at the Boston Museum of Science. I've had to put in some time in different departments, but my eventual plan is to be an interpreter at the Human Body Connection. Most of the volunteers are retired scientists, so you have to know your stuff. If money isn't an object for you, this is a fun way to pass the time.

This and of course, I take two classes at the Extension School.

Good Luck-

Also, how many medical classes are you allowed to take during the program? Are you assigned specific classes to take or is it like other programs where the medical school classes are more of electives if you choose to take them?
