Seriously, WTF is up with the Residency Coordinator??? She's THE most rude individual I've dealt with thus far (over the phone only and twice now) and I'm from a place where rudeness isn't so atypical.... Both calls were legitimate and I called during her 10-4 time slot (per her request), and to confirm details of my already scheduled (but little info provided) interview.......

Anyone else had this experience?

I'm seriously turned off right now, and will post if I cancel the interview.

I didn't really have that experience. Maybe she was just having a bad day? I never called though; pretty much e-mailed and still got responses. Anything you want to know about the day in particular? I interviewed there last month. Program seemed real solid. A few red flags for me were that I only saw the 2 chief residents, saw one in the resident lounge who was friendly enough, but no others. Also, they take away one week of vacation and compensate you one week's pay instead. I liked the program, but overall thought the residents were worked harder than at most other programs that I have been to. It's a very modern facility though, and Anesthesiology seemed pretty well-known within the hospital.

Cancelled my interview as a medical student. I remember hearing that the interview process was not a great one. A good friend of mine matched there... completed his first year and then trasnferred to USC. Worked very hard and was given no respect. He hated BU and regreted ever ranking them. This is his experience. Others may feel differently. Boston on the other hand is a great place although BU is further down Mass ave. (sketchy side of Mass ave.)

Interview process was not too long; I was there for about 4 1/2 hours. Actually, it's the presentations and tours that are extremely long. One presentation by the PD and then another by the Chief Residents meant to give the Resident's perspective. Then an extremely long tour of the facilities. The big give-away and red flag to me was the fact that they need to take away one week of vacation from Residents and that the seniors who were giving us the presentation kept trying to pass that off as a good thing. There was just something off.

I also know someone who worked there. They left. Not under the best of circumstances either.

I was told that, basically, the residency program is used as cheap labor and a way to recruit future faculty.

Take that for what it's worth. I don't have firsthand experience with the place. I'm just repeating what was told to me by a disgruntled former employee (and, yes, the term "employee" is deliberate).

Why would you go there for residency? It's definitely lower tier by reputation.

Thanks for all the input. I cancelled the interview. Wish I would have done it sooner, so that others may have stepped in. Still some time though.

I did the same. As for your original point, yes, she was one of the rudest program coordinators I have ever interacted with! 👎thumbdown

Whoa. Don't know where this is coming from, but profoundly inaccurate about the current program. All of the former residency program leadership (including the coordinator mentioned from this strangely resurrected 6 year old thread) are out (and have been for 5 years). The place is much different these days. Our current program director is a passionate advocate for resident education, is a great intensivist and cardiac anesthesiologist, and has had success both in academics and private practice (directed the cardiac ICU at Cornell for a decade then was president of a private group before coming to us).

I'm unclear of the source of the previous poster's angst/ need to vent. I've been working with our PD since he first joined our group and seen firsthand all the positive changes that have come since his arrival. I've also seen him go to the mat for residents. Care to elaborate on where your insights come from?
