Hey SDNers,

Whats up? I am currently a first year med student at Boston University. While applying last year, I used this website all the time and found it very informative and useful. I always said that if I got into med school, I would help the applicants out and so now after having finished the first semester, I wanted to let you all know that you can message me with any Qs.

I only ask that you keep the Qs pertaining to BU since other Qs are usually answered in different forums.

Take Care.

Thanks PA. I'm happy to have an interview coming up in January. What do you like most about the curriculum? Does it's structure work well for you, and is there anything that you would change if you could. Also, is there anything quirky about the BU interview process that is worth knowing? Thanks again.

that's nice of you. i interviewed at BU a while ago and thought it was a really cool place. How does the mentorship work out? seems like a strong point of the school.

AP, Thanks for doing this!

I interviewed a couple of months ago. I LOVED the students there. We had lunch with first and second years and they were so great. Say hi to Omar and the girl from Chicago with the Chicago accent (she was cute!!) Everyone was great!!

I was wondering how you guys choose the students that go there. There were TONS (~30) of dry, boring, unfriendly applicants there with me, and it really turned me off. I know I shouldn't let that bother me, but I couldn't help but worry that I would have to go to school with some of them. **SHUDDER**

I also thought the buildings were beautiful on the outside, and the sculpture walls were awesome too, but the rest of it was pretty run down.

What are your thoughts on my observations? Thanks!!

I interviewed a month ago and I have a couple of questions....

How do you like the curriculum? I went downstairs to change after my interview and some of the students who just got out of lab told me that they weren't very happy with the amount of lecture time they had. They told me they spent too much time in class. How long are you in school on your typical day?

How long is your commute to school? Is it becoming a hassle or is it not a problem? Is it that much worse in the winter?

Thanks!

Okay here goes?.

(Since u posted u Qs in the public forum? I am answering them here? if u Pmed me,
then check your PMs? because I responded? well I will right after I finish these)

Tweed:
The best part of the curriculum is the professors so far? they are good, intelligent
people? they know what u need to know and what to expect. The school is very
sensitive to the fact there is a lot of work and while u need to do it all, they try hard to not
make it harder than it needs to be. With that said, I have heard other schools in the area
and beyond would fail our exams ? well I don't know about that but if so, there is no
greater feeling than knowing that despite the hard work? that u can handle it and pass it.
I firmly believe that the hard work will pay off and quite frankly, I don't believe that
other schools have it much easier. If I could change anything: well it is a very student
attentive program? they listen to us? so I wish they would allow us to setup our exam
schedule? for instance having psych at the very beginning or the end of exam period
would be better than having the course that we don't study much for right in the middle
of exam period. Was anything quirky?? it was probably 1 of my tougher interviews. I
was asked some difficult ethical Qs. I would practice ethical things and remember they
don't expect u to know too much? be willing to defend ur case but understand and be
sensitive to the alternative? they want to see how u think and how u respond when
someone challenges your presentation.

Rose:
Mentorship: You have a 2nd year as a mentor and u have a faculty member. It is pretty
cool but it depends on what u make of it.

Already:
Sorry, I don't know how they decide. I do know this? they want to know if YOU really
WANT to be there otherwise they might not accept u. As far as boring? realize many
people including premed are shy or nervous. Everyone there wants to get in and is
worried? so far my class is pretty cool. I don't remember my interview group too well
but that was prob because I was stressed out? u know ?I was boring ? ?

well some of the school is a bit run down. I don't know what else to say but that most
tertiary care hospt or city run hospitals are like that. Realize BU bought boston city
hospital a few years back and now it is all called BMC. Also, BU just got a huge huge
huge grant for bioterrorism. We are going to be the biggest bioterrorism in the world I
think and they are just starting on some of those projects along with some other buildings
they have already started work on?. If u are going to interview? be able to talk about
the bioterrorism stuff? u shouldn't have a hard time finding it on the net. So back to my
point? most city run places will look like this and BU has only owned it for a short
time? they are making it a better and safer place to be. Lastly, realize these same
characteristics are what makes ur training in 3rd and 4th years awesome? from what I
hear.

DMBUGA:
Yes days are long. But realize if u don't want to go to class? then don't go. I think no
matter what the case? not everyone will be happy. If there was no lecture? people
would say "well how do I know what to study, they havent taught us this, etc". I go to
class most of the time and yes it can get bothersome since there is so much to study but
hey, I still have access to prof and even if I am confused during lecture it makes me
realize the things to focus on and how much more I need to study. How long is the day:
depends on the day? longest day? u might end up starting at 8:30 and while labs
finishes at 4:30, u might not be done and be there until 7?. That is not the norm but
expect it to happen once or twice. Commute: I know a kid that comes from RI and I
know kids that live across the street? depends on the person. Winter: expect delays but
if u live across the street? might take extra 30 seconds to put on boots and gloves and
then another extra 30s to trench thru the snow all the way across the street ??

i've been complete at boston for 2 months now and no word. i really like the school, but i'm beginning to get nervous about my chances. i know a ton of people who have already gotten the boot but i also know a handful of august mcaters (such as myself) who have already had interview invites?
in your experience, how do my chances sound? (my stats are 3.6 and 34)
