Hello, I have a random question:

Aside from the fact that I won't get laid, do you think having braces during your third year could affect you negatively, since most evaluations are subjective? I have to get braces placed for about 2 to 3 years, b/c I will be having orthognathic surgery done to correct my underbite. That means they will still be on during clinical rotations. Can anyone think of a reason why this would be bad to have during 3rd year (doctors unconciously viewing me as more immature than I really am, etc.)?

Thanks

Tibor

I doubt it. We've had a couple med students with braces - as long as they're hard workers, don't complain, etc. (like a good med student!), they do fine.

I had braces for most of medical school...it is not a big deal and I did fine.

Can you get the clear and ceramic version like Tom Cruise had? -- they are more likely to go unnoticed. I guess if you already looked really young, and were having trouble relating to or getting respect/compliance from older patients because of that, braces wouldn't help things. But I doubt it's a big deal to the residents who grade you.

The older vets at the VA would joke about it sometimes, but the older ladies at the major teaching hospital actually thought it was kind of cute and geeky. Score!

I've had an attending with braces. I think there's less of a stigma associated with them now than there used to be. Braces used to be just for those with absolutely awful teeth. Now a lot of people with minor aligment problems who were told they didn't need braces before are getting them in young adulthood onto adulthood.

It probably won't be very noticeable unless you get themed colors on your bands for things like Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, etc.
