This is a really un-informed post as I have limited knowledge of the details of OB/GYN (haven't done the clerkship yet). Could someone tell me what surgeries are typically performed by OB/GYN docs and how long they take on average. For example:

C-sections...how long on average?
Hysterectomies...how long?
Urinary suspensions...do OB/GYNs do this or is this a fellowship
Any other surgeries and their legnth.

Thanks

C-sections can take as short as 10 minutes from skin to skin to as long as a few hours for a difficult case. You can deliver a baby if need be in under a minute.

Same with hysterectomies. Just a simple hyst can take an hour or less, but a complicated fibroid uterus or an onc debulking can take a few hours.

You will find some general gyns that do uro procedures as well as some urogynecologists who specialize in it for their careers. Those surgeries can take a few minutes to a few hours depending on what they are.

There are lots of surgeries - from as simple as dilation and curretages which can take a few minutes, to ovarian cystectomies, ovarian torison, ectopic pregnancies, endometrial ablation, tubal ligations, and crazy oncology procedures like exenterations. It's more surgery than you might think.
