Hey everyone, I'm a first-year freshman that just got a volunteer spot in a research lab for the next semester. I'm interested in the research that I'll be doing, but the issue is that I don't think I'll be able to come in to the lab over the summer. I have a job lined up over the summer in my hometown that pays very generously and I need that money in order to afford to go to school. My hometown is about 2 hours away from where I go to school, so I could *potentially* come into the lab one day a week or something like that, but it would be pretty tough since I will be working 50 hours a week at my job. Ideally, if I like working in the lab I would like to come back in the following semesters. I was wondering if anyone had experience dealing with their PIs in similar situations and whether they were receptive to your situation or not. Thanks

That's going to be very PI-dependent and I don't know that you can count on any sort of trend. My advice: do what you need to so you can pay your bills. If you can also fit in lab time, great; if not, hit up the PI to get into the lab in the fall; and if that doesn't work, look for a different lab next fall.

Yea that makes sense logically, guess I'm probably just being neurotic about it. Thanks.
