Hi,
I manage Dr. Costanzo's titles for LWW. When we published the cases and problems title, I asked her how students should use the book. This was her response:
During MI Physiology
? Use Physiology Cases and Problems to complement course syllabus, lectures, and traditional texts.
? Read the cases along with each organ system to make your initial learning of physiology more relevant and fun.
? Attempt to answer the questions and compare yours with the ?official?
answers and explanations.
? Begin to appreciate the context of physiology in pathophysiology and
clinical medicine.
During MII Pathophysiology
? Read the relevant cases again, along with each organ system.
? Appreciate classic physiologic concepts ?backwards? from the perspective of your knowledge of dysfunction. This is the most enduring way to learn
physiology! (What caused the hyponatremia? Why was pulse pressure
attenuated? Why was thiazide the drug of choice? What caused the
orthostatic hypotension?)
Preparation for USMLE Step I
? The most important physiologic topics for USMLE Step I are discussed in the context of classic presentations such as acid-base disorders, heart failure, V/Q defects, Na and water balance. The better you understand, the better you will perform on Step I.
? As time permits, read high yield topics and explanations, using the bold face
to alert you.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I also have a how-to-use the third edition of BRS Physiology.
Regards,
Scott
