I'm no dentist here, but from what I know they are pretty useful in cleaning around bridges etc. Like toothbrushes I'm sure excessive force/use could irritate gums.
as long as you're not aggressive with them. they work on the same concept as proxy brushes and are actually MORE beneficial than flossing IF they fit in space passively.
