High School Student interested in the medical field. Anyone have any input on any of these combined programs? are they worth going to? I hope im at the right forum. thanks!

I have 1 classmate who went this route and it has worked out very well for her. It is extremely difficult to get in whether its a bs/do or bs/md program. Most students who are excepted this route are highly intellegent and show a maturity level above most. I think that it is worth going for but you should be prepared that you may not get in your first try and you will have to get in with the rest of us lowly poor bastards after completing your BS.

I did the program and I would say that although it allowed me to save a year and sweat less in undergrad, overall I think I should have gone the traditional route... This does depend on the person. I am doing pretty well in nycom now and everything, but I still think a traditional route would have been my choice if I were to go back in time

I would agree with this. It gives you more options to explore your studies and can change schools. IF you really want to finish you BS or BA in 3 years, you can do summer courses.

I'm in a very similiar program to BrooklynDO right now (just started, in fact) and am very glad that I decided to enroll. It is not binding, do if you get in to school and decide either you don't want to be a doctor at all, of you want to go to a different medical school, or you want to take some time off, etc. you can leave the program no questions asked. I have a classmate who did just that at the end of the last semester. I for one am glad that I know, at least with a reasonable degree of certainity, EXACTLY what I have to do to get into medical school, a 3.3 GPA and a 25 MCAT. There's no intangible concerns, like personality, etc., ECs, whatever. That is not to say that you shouldn't do any relevant ECs, it just takes the pressure off. I already interviewed at NYCOM, but will have to interview again. However, after speaking with NYCOM administration, they simply do not turn away BS/DO students who meet the technical requirements for admission on account of the final interview. I suppose it might happen if you came in drunk, smelling of your own urine, but it hasn't happened in the history of the program. I think it's a win/win situation. FYI, I'm in the SUNY Geneseo--NYCOM program and they're making me sweat with the rigor of the coursework as it is, I wouldn't want to have to worry about that, in addition to all the other concerns by traditional premed classmates fret over. Good luck! 👍
