I'm applying to a BS/MD program in Colorado and one of the essays asks me to describe how I might be an underrepresented minority.
"From ethnic groups who are currently underrepresented in the medical community in Colorado, including
  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic/Latino
  • Native American/Alaska Native
  • Pacific Islander
  • Vietnamese "
However I'm Filipino and I don't quite understand if I'd fit into URM or not? Obviously I wouldn't in states like California and Hawaii. I mean, this is Colorado and there's barely any Filipinos, here it's mostly white/Hispanic. I guess I'm just not sure if Filipinos are considered URM specifically in CO.

Should I just briefly describe that I'm Filipino in the essay anyway and how I have not seen or met any Filipino doctors and nurses where I live? I definitely "feel" like a minority. The rest of my essay would focus on also describing how I'm committed to practicing medicine in Colorado, so I wouldn't just be using my race.

Contact the program and ask them. I would think that think that the Filipino ethnic group would fall within the pacific islander but not sure.
