I have a burning question about the male/female mix at BU.
In 2010 BU had 22.6% of applications by men, one of the lowest percentages of male applications, but not the lowest. BU accepted about 16.8% of male applicants. Harvard 37.8% of applicants were men, and 42.1% of those accepted were men.
I've been alternately told that BU maybe isn't friendly towards male applicants, or that male applicants with stellar/good applications should look elsewhere as the education isn't as prestigious as other public health schools, or maybe BU doesn't prepare you as well for PhD studies, which men might be more inclined to look at.
What's going on? Men aren't welcomed at BU, or for some reason male applicants to public health are more interested in the brand value of the public health school? Below is the actual percentage of men in incoming public health classes. For reference, about 28.8% of applicants to a public health related degree (not just MPH) are men.
John Hopkins 29.3%
UNC 35.5%
Harvard 38.5%
Univ. of Michigan 30.6%
Columbia 21.0%
Emory 23.5%
Univ. of Washington 33.1%
Berkley 23.5%
Minnesota 30.3%
UCLA 26.1%
Pittsburgh 30.0%
BU 18.4%
Obviously, I'm a male candidate, and I feel I would do well wherever I end up, with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic, but this is the sort of information I'd ideally like to have before attending a school.😳
UNC (Global), Harvard (Global Health), UIC (GH), Minnessota (GHIC), Tulane (GHCH), (GESH) JHU, BU (IH)
