BU med student killer thread?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't like to gossip. I like to HEAR about gossip, and I know that little characteristic will make me a terrible doctor, won't it? 🙁

You like to pass judgment on strangers, don't you? That's not one of the best characteristics to have either...

Do you watch the news? Do you ever discuss anything you've heard on the news?

Their is nothing really to here hear. The school admitted a troubled student. This student's life is over. The school is distancing themselves from this situation. All normal behaviors granted the situation. End of story. You're trying to dish up dirt, get names, specific situations...etc. It's really none of your buisness to know, nor mine. It doesn't affect me personally, I don't really care.

I don't know. If you don't care, why are reading and posting in this thread? Instead of criticizing the participants, it'd probably be a better use of your time to just check out and read whatever non-gossipy stuff you can here at SDN.

As for me, I'd be fascinated to hear any stories from anyone who knew this guy. Was he really weird "in a dark way?" 😎 Too bad no one's sharing. I'm also still bummed I missed the engagement site before it got taken down.

I think if attempts are made to "screen" medical school applicants for psychological disturbance in order to avoid admitting another Markoff, those students with treated mental illnesses would be barred admission, and creepy people like Markoff would still get in. I, for instance, have bipolar disorder type II- were we required to give our mental health history to admissions committees, I would certainly not be in school right now.

But, let's say I were an untreated bipolar II- then I might slide right by the admissions committees- answering "no" to all questions related to mental health history. Who is the better candidate? Eforest with no "official" mental health history, on no medications, w no treatment, or Eforest who carries the diagnosis bipolar II- but is well managed on medications.

I think it's impossible to prevent creeps from entering med school- they present themselves too well.

He's not a creep; he's a sociopath.

I honestly don't think any type of screening process could have prevented this.

See ^this little factoid plus the fact that his father is a dentist makes it hard for me to believe the guy was really hurting for cash.

Markoff was in at least 130K gambling debt. Whether his dad was a dentist or not has little to do whether he was strapped for cash. His parents were divorced. He apparently has closer ties to his mother and step-father presumably since he attended mass with them. Also, several news outlets have reported that Markoff was independent and did not rely on his parents for money.

It has also been reported that he often treated his now ex-fiance with lavish gifts and he probably felt pressure to maintain a certain lifestyle he could not afford.

He was in 130K student loan debt. Big difference. Do you know how many people are under immense financial pressure right now? I'm talking losing your house, not struggling to afford a necklace for your girlfriend. Those people, for the most part, do not rob and kill prostitutes, keeping their underwear as mementos. His financial situation is irrelevant.

He wishes. I'd take 130K in gambling debt over 130K in student loan debt anyday, assuming said debt was for Foxwoods.

Of course, there's a reason that casinos don't loan money without firm collateral, and why you'll never meet a kid with 130K in gambling debt unless he owns a yacht worth $200K. If the debt was to someone shadier than Foxwoods, this kid's legs would have been broken sometime around 50K.

You need to add the letters "un" as a prefix to your username.

His $130K debt is his student loan debt. The news outlets reported that he was "independent" -- that is merely the status he applied with for FAFSA. Med students don't work so any med student over the age of 18(except for the lucky few married to millionaires 😛) could declare themselves "independent" and "indigent".

There are homeless people in this world struggling to find food. Forgive me if I don't feel pity for a guy who was trying to buy the affections of fiancee who did not really love him.

really?

Not really. Pure conjecture on my part which was in joking response to informed's conjecture. He stated that the guy was probably gambling so he could afford to provide his fiancee with expensive gifts. My comment was meant to express that someone who truly loved him wouldn't require him to go over and above his financial means in order to provide useless trinkets.
