I have been accepted to 3 schools and wanted to have a discussion of where you think I would get a better dental school experience and education - granted an arbitrary discussion...

Few things to know about me.
I will be paying out of state tuition at Minnesota.
BU and NYU are both private so tuition cost are high, luckily cost is not a negating factor for myself.

BU offers the APEX program - considered a pro but is it really?!?!?, city of Boston, competing among 3 schools for patients - can people get patients for procedures - level of education - board rate passage ?!?!, laid back atmopshere

Minnesota offers a dental stimulation clinic that is new about two years old and renovated facilities, massive pool of patients, smallest number of students in comparison to the other schools, faculty seemed very friendly during interview but reflective everyday

NYU - NYC, reputation of international program but so many students, feel massive competition, nice facilities, heard that a large group is removed from year 1

could you guys please help me make a decision - help me think of things that i should consider etc...

I have also been pondering about which school to attend for a while now.

I'll give you a summary of what i have found out about BU:

*it seems like the BU Apex program is what you make of it.
it seems like some students think it's a waste of time while others make good use of it and use it to make connections for future associate jobs. Also, it seems like the 2nd yr APEX is pretty useful since you can use the free time to study for the board exam.

**As for the board exam, i don't think anyone really knows since they don't seem to release the statistic but i would guess it's about the national avg.

Before, I was a bit obsessed with schools' board avgs but now I don't think it's that big of a deal. Just as long as the school teaches you everything and the school pass rate is around the national avg, why should it matter? study hard for it and you should do fine.

The board exams tests your individual knowledge and averages mean very little. Of course if the school average is much higher than all other schools in the country, then it's a good indication the school is doing something right but most schools must have about the same average. So my plan is to study my butt off for the board and ace it.

***Patients: I have been asking around and it seems most BU students graduate on time. heard some stay a few more months to finish the requirements. heard boston is the only city in MA and nearby states that have dental schools so it seems the patient base is there.

i don't know much about the other schools mentioned so I don't have any informed input on them.

Hope you make the best decision. Good luck!

Even out of state, Minnesota is still much cheaper than BU and NYU. It's a great school, I'd definitely choose Minnesota. I didn't apply there because I don't think that I would have gotten in from out of state, so few do except a handful from Wisconsin. Plus, you can't go wrong with a Big Ten school 😉

I interviewed and was accepted at BU and NYU...I chose NYU because of the patient pool, facilities and the experience to live in NYC. I've talked to several students and they seem to handle the large class size well. I don't know about you, but during my interview, I was really surprised that I did not get a sense of being a little fish in a big pond. As far as the large group removed after year 1, I think that's b.s. I talked to a couple students (friends of friends) and one in particular said she knew 3 people that left and none of them were forced---1 just flunked out, another had personal issues and the third decided dentistry was not for them. You have to realize NYU accepts a large amount of applicants, so statistically, more people are going to leave, but I imagine its relatively the same as other schools.

I loved NYU when I visited it. I think you should try to figure out where you'll be happiest attending...it is 4 years of your life. All dental schools will prepare you to pass the boards and we were told that the first time pass rate at NYU for NBDE 1 was 98% for that year...with a class that large, they must be doing something right.

Best of luck..just remember, there is no wrong decision...congrats on your acceptances!

3rd year NYU student here and I think NYU was the best thing that I've had EVER done. I haven't been to other dental schools but I LOVE this school. I would say the only downside about NYU is the tuition. As far as boards, in 300 something people in our class 2 people failed, they probably didn't study at all! It wasn't the schools fault!!! and 20 something got above 90. I wasn't one of them!!!! I've been in the clinics for almost 9 month now, amazing facilities, tons of patients. you probably saw the clinic floors coz I know they show you the clinic when you come for the interview. NYU has a great reputation in NYC, it's the go-to place for ppl in all 4 boroughs for their dental needs if they can't afford $2000 crown in the nyc. Don't be scared of the large class size. there are 300 something of us in the 3rd and same for the 4th year but there are FOURTEEN group practices in this school each have roughly 50 student, 25 third year 25 fourth year. So basically third and fourth year, you only see these 50 people, cause 90% of time you are in clinic. let me know if you have more specific question about nyu & good luck!

what exactly is the apex program or is it to hard to explain , jw

Out of state cost of attendance for U Minn is 90k (I interviewed there, I got the handout). From the handout: "Direct costs: tuition and fees, books and supplies, hospitalization ins, computer - non-resident $71,497. Indirect costs (living expenses, etc): $18,543"
Comes up to ~90k.

For BU: http://www.bumc.bu.edu/osfs/sdm/budgets0910/
$87k

for NYU: $94k http://www.nyu.edu/dental/financialservices/tuitionfeesexpensesdds.html

Just to make it clear

My bad, I used the PreDents data which said Minnesota was $182,174 over 4 years, shame on me for using PreDents for that lol. And I also assumed that one could claim Minnesota residence after 1 year, therefore only pay 1 year of OOS tuition, but I'm not sure you can do this for Minnesota.

My statement still stands though, I'd still choose Minnesota taking the numbers that you listed in consideration. I guess if those numbers are accurate than price shouldn't come into play for the OPs consideration then.

You cannot claim MN residency after a year. I have read through that policy several times and spoke with the office in charge of that a few times. I wish that weren't the case though! I will be starting at MN this fall as an OOS and it would be nice!

Yeah, you can't do that at Michigan either. Schools will do whatever it takes to suck every cent out of you...
