I've heard good and bad about both schools. The previous posts about BU really worried me, but after speaking with the students on interview day, it seems as if the shift to group practice model have alleviated some of the concerns.

My main questions: is the clinical education at BU still worrisome? Are many difficult cases passed on to the post grad programs? Is getting a chair still difficult? Would you chose to attend here if you had to do it all again?

Any advice from NYU or BU students on this decision would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, so BU just implemented the group practice model recently...nyu has had it for over a decade, at least. a couple of people i know at BU said getting patients was difficult and they didn't have enough chairs.

at nyu, we get our patient rosters before even seeing patients. let's just say that there are a lot of patients, and more than enough chairs.

NYU >> BU ...just from what I have heard from multiple people at both schools.

Depends on cost of attendance though...BU has the Delta Dental Scholars program which pays for tuition in exchange for service at a CHC...I also spoke to a few BU students who said that it's increasing the amount of externships (now two 5-week externships) which will allow students to get credit for procedures done there...

It seems like COA is very similar for both. I'll have to look into this delta scholarship as I've never heard of that before. Thanks!

Look into it- It's only offered at BU Dental right now. Special agreement b/w BU and Delta Dental of MA.

Bumping this thread. Any current students have any helpful info for me as I try to make this decision?

you won't have a problem getting patients at NYU and there's never a shortage of chairs. can't say the same thing about BU. the clinical exposure you get here is second to none. we have some of the best professors in dentistry--one of the implant godfathers was here for quite some time (despite him leaving he founded a whole wing for implant dentistry), esthetics (one of the founders of laminate veneers), and even more.

you get a patient roster, with business cards halfway into D2.

plus you get invisalign certified so that's another plus.

Thank you for your response. I can see that NYU has a huge patient base and no lack of clinical experience and that clearly ranks higher than BU. I'm just worried about being in such a large class.. Do you feel you could easily approach professors for help whether it be lecture or in clinic? Or are they so busy teaching each different section that there's no time?

professors are definitely approachable, for the most part.
