Well I know people who are going there right now(not necessarily the ones I met in the interview) who would back be up on this. And who the hell cares if you go to a warm place with nice beaches 😡 you are not going to school for vacation.

Chill out dude! I'm just letting you know about the lake effect snow - trying to help you out!

I grew up in the Berkshires (hills) of Massachusetts and the last Buffalo winter was pretty much exactly like a traditional New England winter...really not bad at all if you're used to the northeast. It is the towns south of Buffalo and father east in the state that tend to get the big "dumps" of snow, and UB is in north Buffalo, right inside the city limits. Just live within walking distance (so you don't have to dig your car out and try to find parking spaces when the lines are covered), buy some boots, and you'll be fine. 👍

Congrats to everyone who got in!!! I'll see ya there. 😎

Last year must have been a mild winter because it is bitter cold in the winter and the snow is a major annoyance in Buffalo. The snow is heavier in the southtowns. I have many memories of trudging through inches of snow up the hill from the Main-Bailey parking lot to the dental school because they don't shovel the path until 9 am but we had to be in class by 7:45am. Then at the end of the day, I got to walk down the hill which had been shoveled, but was greeted by 2 inches of snow obscuring a layer of frost on my windshield courtesy of the wind blowing the snow around all day.

Well the plus side to the crappy weather is that there are few distractions from the studying and labwork you'll be supremely busy with. I can't think of any neighborhoods within walking distance to the school I would live in so that was not an option for almost 95% of my class. Only 2 guys lived within walking distance. One rode his bike in the better weather and drove his car in the winter. The other one almost always got a ride in the winter.

Considering the wacky weather over the last decade we might not get that much snow. At least I can look forward to getting a decent place within walking distance.😎

Congrats to all the acceptances!

Provided I maintain a 3.5 the rest of the year (I'm in a 3/4 combined program), I'll be there next year with you guys. I'm looking forward to it.

As an added bonus in the acceptance email they are only requesting a deposit of $350😎

Just wait to see the faces of other people going to expensive private schools with their $$$$$ deposits.:meanie:

Oh and the snow bit on buffalo I think it is overblown. I don't think the city itself gets overwhelmed with snow.[/QUOTE]

HAHA!! keep telling yourself that! I GREW UP there and I'm telling you, the snow is a$$ kicking ****ty.

BUT, good school and you can't beat the price!

I grew up in the snow belt south of Buffalo and moved into the city of Buffalo for dental school and I have currently been in NYC for a while for residency. The snow in the city of Buffalo and in the northern suburbs is laughable compared to the areas south of the city. There has been times where the city has gotten blasted with snow (October storm 2006), but generally, it's more the blustery cold winds that are tough to bare. For those worried about the cold and snow who may not be used to that type of weather, you get used to it quick and it should not be a determining factor for choosing between Buffalo and other dental schools. The warm people in the area make up for the cold winter weather!!

When I visited Buffalo I loved how laid back the whole place was. No nasty traffic to worry about, I felt like I was going on vacation since people were so laid back, except for the interview.

I am a student at Buffalo and am on my third winter here in school. Having spent my entire life living in New England (Boston and Southern New Hampshire), the winters here right near the dental school are no different than what I experienced in New England.

In fact, knowing the locations of Tufts Dental and BU Dental and the commutes associated with those two schools, I would say that on a snowy day, you're better off trying to get to Buffalo than to Tufts or BU. Try dealing with the B section of the Green line on a snowy day... or walking from Park Street Station to Tufts Dental in 10 degree weather... I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy.

If anyone is from California and thinking about Buffalo... look out! You'll be in for a rude awakening. But the winters here are no worse than what you'd see in Boston. So, don't let the snow discourage you. You'll see this type of snow everywhere in the Northeast.

I love Buffalo. Its one of my top choices and I am really torn between Buffalo and another school right now.

I went to highschool in San Diego, California. The weather there was like heaven. It never gets too hard nor too cold. The beaches were really nice and I must say I really miss the weather there.

That being said, I did go to college in Davis and I must say Davis probably has one of the worst weathers in Cali because its pretty much a desert. I am pretty certain that Buffalo is still colder during the winter, but I've heard that the summer months in Buffalo are actually quite nice. In Davis, however, winter can get as cold as 20 something degrees, but during the summer months the temperature can soar up to 110+...

I can sort of relate where you are coming from jigabodo. I spent part of my life in Canary Islands, Spain. We had no winter and fall the weather was nice. It oscillated between 60's to 90's, you could go to the beach year round and it was dry almost no rain except for the occasional drop. I think people too used to California are going to feel a little bit miserable at first but they'll eventually get used to this weather. The thing is you are not going to Buffalo to hangout but to got to school. The summers in the northeast are nice but the weather in Boston tends to swing to the extremes, very frigid in winter and muggy hot in the summer.

Buffalo weather to me is just like being in Boston, that is my initial impression.

the difference snow wise between boston and buffalo is that you get continuous lake effect in buffalo, boston usually you just get hit with big storms.

and the south towns get a ton more than north buffalo

Lake effect hasn't exactly been continuous the past few years...other than a few storms the winters have been rather mild snow wise...really cold though

No you don't get consistent lake effect, as soon as lake erie freezes over which usually happens by the end of december, the lake effect is basically gone and we end up with consistent flurries or small storms which add up. But, winters in buffalo are over exaggerated, ive lived in the buffalo area my entire life. The city doen't get as much snow as broadcasted, but I will say this, if you can't handle negative wind chills then you wont like it. You will encounter many weeks of this. On another note, do any of you that have been accepted have any advice for the interview? Mine is coming up in a week and I desperately want to get into UB. Any advice would be great, and congrats on your acceptance👍

What are the average temperatures during the winter?

The whole lake hasn't frozen over in quite a while IIRC, but regardless lake effect is more of an issue in buffalo than most of the places these folks are coming from like boston, etc. But I haven't lived there since a while back so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Where I live now, a couple years back we'd see headlines in the syracuse paper "Buffalo gets the press, Syracuse gets the snow" lol

I didn't interview because it was a 3/4 program, my interview was a couple years back. Good luck to you!

Hey just wondering how many of you from nyc/long island plan on going to buffalo

What are the average temperatures during the winter?
It fluctuates anywhere between a few weeks of temps in the single digits with negative wind chills to a few weeks of temps in 30s or 40s, the weather here is really inconsistent.
